Whealie - Hagon rear shock some q's

Hi Chris - just looking into my next purchase when its time.

How are you gtting on with the Hagon shocks after this time?

    Few other questions:

Do they just give you a standard weight spring in the £295 price, or do you have to pay extra for a firmer one ?

How do you find the remote preload adjuster? r would you have preffered the adjustble rings ?

Do you know how much range of movement it gives i.e from least pressure to maximum - so if you set it on max with yourself and full luggage do you lose a lot of rear ride height with the bike weighed down ????

Any other thoughts on the shocks ?

Been looking at wilbers, technoflex and also nitron, (not looking at ohlins) but all going beyond my price limit - although they can all include an adjustable ride height as well as preload which could be handy.

    Cheers Ant.

I remember "Cabbage" rated the Fournales Air Shock quite highly (on his RD03) so they may be worth considering (I've no idea how expensive or rare they are)

Can't comment on Hagon but I've got a Wilbers shock on the VFR as has my brother in law on his and Dad's got one on his Pan. They're brilliant, hence half the family running them! I'd like to keep the shock on my newly aquired RD03 original, but if I can't get it to perform as originally intended then I shall be going down the Wilbers route again. Do like the Wilbers and Technoflex a lot, but for what i'm after, theres a bit more £ involved The handling of my bike in generall is fine at the moment, but i do think the rear can be improved.

I'll start saving now, and see how much ive got at the end of the year.

Had a very good look at Nitron shocks, and they compare VERY well with these, but seem to cost a bit less.

Certainly the Wilbers stuff was even more attractive when the pound was stronger against the Euro. Back then price was on a par with nitron. Since then the price of the nitron seems more attractive. Nitron stuff gets very good write ups and good to support a UK firm too I suppose.

I'm using a Hagon usint with remote preload on my Transalp. I had a few issues with getting it setup properly as the damping was VERY solid and didn't want to work properly for me. This was fixed by winding it right down and then going for a ride and getting the oil flowing or unsticking something I guess! It was then a tweak and adjust to get that setup.

An easily adjustable Preload is very, very nice indeed. Should have been standard IMO, but sorted at a bit of cost With the 'alp I have not had any issues with ride height, but I have not tried 2 up fully loaded, but I would not anticipate any problem. For me, the standard spring was a tad hard, and I would have preferred a softer one, but laden or two up, the "out of the box" spring rating was good.

    Anton,

    been away so apologies.

I bought the standard with the adjuster. It is about £350. I loved it so much I bought another for teh Zebra (making the rear shock worth more than half the original purchase price of the bike).

Full luggage and two up you can jack it right up still, though I quite like having the bike a little lowered then so I can get flat feet on the ground.

If you do that, you need to remember to soften it a bit once all the weight is off. I forgot once, hit a speed bump and was nearly thrown over the handlebars.

I have it set pretty firm most of the time, which jacks up the height of the bike too.

As one bike is in bits in the garage, if you want to pop round one day, we could swap yours over and you'd be welcome to borrow it for a week or so to see if you like it.

    Anton,

I have bought a little used Hagon on one of the Alps.

It's ok but don't think the damping quality is as good as the original (not as if they are that good!), and there is signs of oil seepage past the seals.

There is about 11mm of adjustment with the hyd preload adjuster but the hydraulic piston can be screwed up/down the damper to alter the 'base' setting.

As far as I'm aware, Hagon fit whatever spring is rewuired for the given application in with the price.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Whealie - Hagon rear shock some q's

    Hi,
Dont know much about shock replacement but was a bit concerned about mine as the compression adjuster can be turned from soft to firm with no effect and no resistance on the adjuster. im guessing thats not right and it is either broken or needs attention. Its another job for when time and funds allow.
Would it not be cheaper to have original serviced/rebuilt than replace entire shock? Have you guys considered WP suspension, there has been good reviews about them on other threads?
    Li.
