    Re: Chain and Sprocket problem....maybe???

Thanks again for all the replies. The more people replied saying my old chain and sprocket were shafted the more it kicked me into gear to replace.

New chain and sprocket arrived today. Not original OEM parts like I was hoping for....but needs must (I did try and explain but all I got in return was that Honda dont make sprockets. .)

Anyway, just want to get them on the bike now. Put the front sprocket on the output shaft and it fits a LOT better. The old one was really worn, hence the side to side play in it. This one has very little side to side wobble.

Question is which way do I put it on the shaft? My initial thinking is the side that say 16T facing out.

so put it on this way........

    and not this way....

    Is this right?

Will start fitting the chain later today.....thanks to Austin for the loan of the chain tool and XT6 for instructions on how to use it!!!

    Re: Chain and Sprocket problem....maybe???

New chain and sprocket set finally on. Cant say it was the easiest most fun job Ive ever done

Came with no instructions with the chain. I thought I had 2 links eg 1 and a spare. So I picked up the first to hand and went about joining the chain with it. My first concern was the length that was supposed to be rivoted. It seemed too long. But I proceeded and followed the rivot tool diagram....which didnt say put a rivot tool in. Simple I know, but unless it is written down I dont do it. So I ended up pushing the rivot out of the chain backwards. It was then I realised I had actually started with the split link chain attachment.

So I started again. Getting the side plate on wasnt easy. Seemed to need a lot of force applying. Then didnt like rivoting either. Seemed again to take a lot of force.

But its done.......and it is a lot better. Gear changes seem smoother and the ride feels better. The old front sprocket was completely shot. Each of the teeth seemed to have worn to a triangle. Luckily the output shaft seemed OK.

So going back to the original video concerns. The chain still jumps around when on centre stand in first gear. Putting this down to no loading. The front sprocket no longer wobbles like it used to = RESULT. The chain still has as much side to side movement but this is only when no load on centre stand. Will ignore this. Its OK when on side stand under load.

So was it worth it - YES. Learnt a lot. And have piece of mind for the sake of £110.

    Brake pads next.

Just did mine and the side plate was a tight fit.. I borrowed SteveTs riviter takes some force , but then you are swaging the soft pin.. hope you greased the pins and fitted the o rings supplied in the wee plastic packets

lucky with the output shaft, I had a sigh of relief when I checked mine and it was mint on high mileage motor..

the chain will jump around in gear on the centre stand under no load so stop doing it!!!!

Yep, my side plate was a tight fit. O rings fitted. But I had difficulty trying to get the rivots to 5.5mm. Really gave it some force but also didnt want to over do it..so my rivots are somewhere between 5 and 5.5mm. Hope tey do.

    Re: Chain and Sprocket problem....maybe???

    Hey beddosm,

I had the same problem, I was in Letterkenny then all of a sudden I heard a horrible grinding sound from engine. The plate fixing on the front sprocket had no teeth left and the front sproket came off the shaft. The drive shaft looked ok (me think-me hope). The sprocket was not an original Honda part. So I replaced the front, rear sprocket and the chain with original Honda parts. There is still a bit of play "side to side" movement on front spoket.
Does anyone know what would of caused the front fixing plate to get so worn?

Doe's anyone know or have any video's of how much play should be on front sprocket?
