    K&N Filter Question

My RD04 will be receiving some maintenance shortly and I was considering fitting a K&N air filter in place of the current one (one of the straight replacement types, not the individual pods). Will I need to do anything with the carb jetting if I do this? Should I empty my wallet even further and get a Dynojet Kit?

    Re: K&N Filter Question

If you have done no other modification then the K&N filter will not need any other adjustment.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: K&N Filter Question

I am not convinced about that - I have fitted one - also got a Motad Venom exhaust and I am sure it is popping and backfiring more on the over run - especially in the Alps on the decents.

I don't think the fit is too goo either - mine is an RD07a and I have to remove the wire mesh over the inlet in the airbox for thefiltdr to fit- surely this is reducing the gap so restricting air passage. Also the fit of the holes where the bolts go through is not brilliant - I had to dremel one out a bit so it sat correctly and I an not convinced it sits well at the base of the air box - the standard one has a sponge base and you can feel it compress the K&N has har rubber.

Power increase - not noticed anything but I think the bike is noisier and at certain revs not quite so smooth.

Fully serviced by me with 33k mls all in good order.

I think I will go back to the standard one.

Same as Digitalcaptive - same mpg and no significant oomph
Would say that the venom can doesn't pop or talk so much on overrun- which I miss actually.

When I fitted it I must admit I checked the box a couple of times to make sure it was the correct one. I didn't need to modify anything but it did need some 'gentle persuasion'

Mirrors my experience with one on a '94 Transalp, plus the metal backing (partly exposed to the weather on a Transalp - maybe also on an RD04?) rusted like hell and bent easily. Even cheap pattern filters were better. I always suspected it of contributing to the oil burning I was getting at 78,000 miles, but that's just supposition based on reports of poor filtration of fine particles. On the other hand, it's a one off purchase and you'll never need to buy another. Overall I think I'd go for a foam one, but I decided to stick with pattern paper ones for this bike.

    Re: K&N Filter Question

May be a silly question but you did oil the K&N filter didn't you?

The idea is to oil them and then when they get dirty wash them, dry them and oil them again.

I assume an unoiled filter lets in more air than it should, hence the popping.

    Re: K&N Filter Question

The filter came fully packaged in K&n box etc with all stickers and instructions. They clearly said and you could tell by red colour and oil that it was pre oiled. No need to add any more. I am familiar with k&n - got. A pair on my Guzzi.

As I said - not over the moon about it - going to take exhaust header off and put new gaskets other than that all else done but may try richening mixture at tick over as this is throttle shut position on over run so may be a bit weak at that point.
