    main stand spring...help.

Hi guys, fitted new main stand, but can not get the spring to attach to the lug. ive tried levering it with a screwdriver, through the top tube on the stand, i get it nearly there but cant get it off driver and onto lug. Wrecked two drivers now. Tried with pliers but spring is too strong and lose grip, stood bike on stand but that dont help. Is their a special tool to attach spring or do i need to get down the gym?

Any advice greatly appreciated, Cheers Li.

Make a spring puller, a peice of wire like a thick welding / brazing rod bend one end at 90 degrees so you can pull it and at the other end bend a tight u on it, then you can hook the spring and then pull it onto the stand

ohh did this on the alp..

even tried leaving the pivot pin out and attaching the springs then trying to man handle the stand to line up and put the pin back in.. not enough hands .. eventually went back to trying to lever the spring back on.. had finaly given in ... give it on last go and made it..

lost some skin in the process.. dont envy you with that one ,, brut force I am afaid.. and they are so tight to the down pipes too

Don't know how different it is on the AT, but I put my springs on first and then levered the stand into place.
At least there is more to get hold of with the stand.
I popped the shaft partly through and putting my body into the wierdest shape, tapped the end of the shaft through when I levered the stand.
Get someone else to tap it through; much easier

Have you not heard of the 2p coin trick? Bend the spring so the joints open and place 2p coins in each gap as you work your way along it, lengthening the spring temporarily. Or was it 1p coins?

That's what I did on my @, but got the missus to push the pivot through.

    Guys ,
brilliant advice, will try the spring puller method as i have been nearly there on a couple of attempts.
The 2p coin trick is clever but there ars two springs one inside the other so may well be tricky. but if puller fails i will try this in combination with puller. Dont want to dismantle again as its caked in grease and the split pin is bent through levering against it with screw driver!
Hopefully just as im about to quit i will get it...Thats Life.
    Thanks for your help. Li.
