    German ebay AT panniers???

Ok Guys, lots of questions here. Found these pannier racks on Ebay Germany...They are off an RD04.

    A, would these fit RD03?

B, If they do fit and i bid and win them, is there a German comrade on here who would allow me to have them sent to his address and forward them on to me?

Our German ebayer will only send to Germany

C, or does anybody have any to sell or be interested in manufacturing some at reasonable cost. my main intention would be for them to save the back end if i drop bike whilst off road.

Here they are... thanks in advance.

Too far away for me to collect but you can have them sent to me if you get the winning bid.
Dont know if they'll fit, but if you want you can collect and with a bit of electric glue and a tube bender I can make them fit.

Oh and you posted a link to your watching list on ebay but I found them any way

    Re: German ebay AT panniers???

Those look like the givi frames I bought from Alan H and later sold on to raymo here (View Profile: raymo).

He has an RD03. I think he's got an RD04 sub-frame fitted to it but he might be able to give you a rough idea about the mounting points on a standard rd03 in relation to those bars if you drop him a PM (I can't say for sure as I have an RD04).

Inside that bag of nuts and bolts in your photo are probably the givi monokey fittings (that screw into the little holes in the tabs on the bars). If not you can pick them up as spares for a few quid easy enough online or make your own. Then the givi and kappa mono-key cases will click straight on.

They don't make those racks any more as far as I'm aware, so they seem quite rare. Worth a bid imho as you'd probably not have much trouble selling them if they don't fit (tubular luggage frames for the older africa twins are a bit thin on the ground).

I think hepco becker make a set of tubular bars for the RD03 too (Hepco&Becker Black Pannier Rack Honda XRV 650 Africa Twi.. - Motorbikes and Parts - Givi / Kappa Motorcycle Luggage Specialists - hepcobecker-black-pannier-rack-honda-xrv-650-africa-twin-p-10216.html) which seem a bit stronger than the givi bars (if they're like the RD04 ones), but they seem quite pricey. Even moreso for the RD03 ones. I went for these eventually as I wanted to mount ali cases and was worried the givi frames might not be strong enough (but that may have just be worrying about nothing and I'm sure they could be strengthened if necessary).

Apart from that I don't think there are any off the shelf tubular luggage frames available new, and they rarely come up on ebay or here (or anywhere else I looked) used.

    Re: German ebay AT panniers???

I've got a brand new set of these in a box, that I fitted once to my RD04, but never ever used.

They actually weren't a brilliant fit, and I reckon that was because they were intended to for an RD03. The main problem was the left side bar was very close to the RD04 side panel and meant you couldn't open the toolbox lid, which is where I have a hidden 12v socket. The RD03 side panel is slimmer, so probably wouldn't foul the bar.

    From memory, they mount as follows;

The two welded bars sticking forward mount to the top of passenger footpeg hangers. You remove the Honda pivot pin and replace it with a bolt that passes through the luggage frame, the hanger, and the footpeg.

The two small brackets mount on the subframe bolts, and then pass under the sidepanel and are bolted to the lower forward bolt holes.

The rear lower bolt holes (on both frames) mount the long angled bracket which bolts to them and then bolts onto the bar that extends down behind the number plate.

    Good Luck

    Bob

    Snaphappy

Thanks for your reply. Are you sure I can have them sent to you? That would be brilliant and I would be able to inform seller that I have a useable German address. Don't know anything about tube bending and electric glue, but if I won the racks, you could explain more then.

    Thanks again

Thanks for your reply. Some excellent observations and information. I hadn't realised you could clip hard cases onto them. That's brilliant. Makes them all the more desireable!

    Thanks again

    BobA

Thanks for your reply. Again, as ever, excellent information. I will definitely bid now and, safe in the knowledge, if I am a winner, I have the fitting instructions here in.

    Thanks again.

Bob's spot on with the fitting instructions (for the RD04 anyway - that's how they mounted to mine and the bar was also very close to the toolbox - though I could still get mine open just).

I found some fitting instructions I downloaded when I got mine, and a photo of racks fitted together off the bike that might help if you win them (attached)

Why not go to a good fabricator and get a set made up - won't be that expensive if you take the bike there.

It's not that difficult to make them ifyou have the bending and welding kit.

    Re: German ebay AT panniers???

I noticed a link to this site below on the adventure bike rider forum recently (think it was snaphappy posted it?):

    HD Panniers

They seem to do a mounting kit with hoops, for you to have arms and attachments welded on for mounting to the bike. If you're thinking of having some racks fabricated they might be helpful perhaps. Then you've got the fitting kit to match the hoops to fit some panniers too. First time I've seen this company and no experience of them myself so can't vouch for them personally, but they might be worth a look.

Touratech do the same thing selling their hoops alone (only they were more expensive just for the hoops without a fitting kit from what I remember).

If you do go for having some fabricated locally, it might be an idea to mirror the dimensions of the touratech hoops. I think I spotted a post here recently that the metal mule frames are the same dimensions (best to check if this is important), so having hoops to match those sizes will open up more options for you for panniers too (plus many used panniers that get listed on ebay are off touratech frames so will already be drilled to fit them opening up the options a bit if you decide to buy panniers later).

Alternatively I've got a givi wingrack for an RD04 and a couple of givi plastic panniers I was going to be selling soon (though I'll need to wait until the ali panniers I've ordered turn up and I get them fitted first as I'm due to leave for a trip soon and want to make sure I've got them mounted OK and have the givi's to fall back just in case in the mean time). They aren't tubular though, and might be more difficult to modify to fit the RD03 than tubular frames if they don't fit right to start with. Plus the side plates are aluminium, so perhaps not so flexible for mounting aluminium panniers and may not be as good off-road (I've dropped the bike on them a few times and they've protected it perfectly and the mountings are stronger than any other rack I've seen - but off-road I'm not sure how they'd hold up if you dropped the aluminium side plate on a big rock or something).

The ones in Zen's picture are actually of my bars and my floor!!! (Where did he get that pic? He must have sneaked into my house one night!!!)

I've never used them, apart from a trial fitting, and I just hung onto them as they're no longer available, but perhaps I'll never ever use them!!

Drop me a PM and make me an offer, I could be tempted to part with them.
