    50 000miles - service suggestion

Bikes due to hit 50 000 pretty soon.

I don't trust a previous owner saying he changed the oil 1000miles ago. What do you guys reckon I should do for the big old 50?

Oil + Filter / Plugs / Air filter?

I will also replace the chain and sprockets.

    Other inspections ?

    Grease the suspension linkages?
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

personally I would do the following:

    Oil and filter change.
    Air Filter change.
Tank off and Valve clearance check.
    Replace Spark plugs.
Wheels off and inspect bearings regrease them and the spindles.
Whilst wheels off check inspect renew brake pads as required.
Also whilst wheels off, remove dog bones on rear linkages and regrease with waterprrof grease.
Renew brake pads THEN renew brake fluid.
    Drain and replace coolant.
    Check chain and sprockets.
    Vaseline Battery teminals.
    Drain breather under left footpeg.
Drain and replace front forks with 10w oil or 7.5w If your offroading a lot.
    Oil clutch and throttle cables.
    Renew Fuel filter.

Check steering bearings aswell as all the fasteners etc...

the list goes on but thats the basis of what I do whenever I buy a bike from anyone.

    Hope it helps

    Chris

Bit of a "How long is a piece of string" question this. It really all depends whether you're happy with the bike's condition at the moment or not. If it will make you happy to start with a clean slate then do a proper service including items such as the fork oil, coolant and brake fluid change. Otherwise, if you don't suspect any problems then just change the oil & filter and give the bike a once over including brake pads (and discs), lubing all the cables. Probably worth checking the valve clearance too. They should be OK though. Also clean the whole choke cable and assembly. Have a look at the plugs and possibly balance the carbs if the bike is running rough.

Bike is running smooth. Not too bad on fuel either. Granted, speding most of my highway time above 6krpm shes not too heavy - Still lighter than a mk1 dero.

    Farmboy, great bucket list!

    Ive already lubed all cables.

The previous owner has not really ridden the bike that much in the last 18 months. The exhaust really got a whole lot louder today after our 400km stint.

All that - I would also:

Check all electrical connections, clean and WD40
    Check spokes are solid etc
    Lube speedo cable/clutch cable etc
Get the wife to service the rider ( sorry, wrong forum!)
WD40 into switch gear as well

    HTH
When I grow up ..... yeah right!

Y'see, I could say "You can go fast, I can go anywhere, Africa Twin" But you buggers have 'em as well so it would sound pretty lame .... oops!
