Re: RD07 regulator ?
I have had a a few reg rec issues this year.. the new to me At had a new battery fitted and the reg was only giving out 12+ volts..should be 13.6+
the reg can give low volts.
fitted an R6/R1 regulator of the Ebay, it was an SCR type not the newer FET , but volts are now 13.6 the volts will rise from tickover but should stabilise above 2-3000 rpm.
Measure the voltabe at the battery...
The XLV reg fried ( 18+ volts this time so I fitted the AT one to it and got another R1/R6 regulator of Ebay.. this one is from a pre 2006 R1 and is an FET 50A unit the size of a brick ( at work so cant recall, but its off a R1 5VY ft 011AA from memory. will take 100v AC 3 phase and rated at 50@ 14.5V 725 watts.. the AT gives out 350w max so should run cool )
this would not fit the XLV.. no room as I say it's huge.. its the same foot print as the other regs but tall .. the fins make it 50-60mm high....
fitted to the AT 14.5v at 1000rpm !! does not even get warm!! it would not fit under the seat so it,s mounted on the right where the RD04 water expansion bottle is.. but as mine is an RD03 ( RD04 motor.. long story) there is room there..
cheched at the battery and it gives 14.5 votls no variation from tickover right through the rev range.. brilliant..
I have a garmin V GPS and if you hold the enter key down as you power it on the unit comes online with a diagnostic page. This shows what supply voltage the unit is getting.. 5-6v on internal battery.. 12.5 ish when the ignition is on and 14.5 when the engine is running .. however the unit is tied into a switched feed in the headlight cowl.. switch the lights on and it drops to 12.5 !!! checked the battery 14.5.. so volts drop across the wiring to the highlamp, ( these are the high current draw 2x 55w pulls about 8-10 amps, 0.2 ohm resistance of the wiring and associated connectors gives 2 volts drop ( this is 20watts going as heat .. winter job will bit to fit relays and a big fat cable ( 30amp fused ) up to the headlight to overcome this..
sorry for the detail, but bottom line is that, as said, you need to measure the voltage at the battery
if the reg is giving out less than 13.5 volts above 2000rpm.. its stuffed, but not in a bad was .. my XLV reg was giving out 18+ at 3000rpm .. more above that, so kept it down while I limped to the bike shop.. it took out the battery .. and the stator windings
so a low volts reg .... is it bowing out gracefully
get an FT 0012 or if you have room the FT 0011
