    Rear rack weight limits

The rear rack on my @ displays a warning saying 10KG max limit. I have travelled with approx 15kg's on this rack, 2 up with no problems.

But what is the max limit for carrying on these racks? What weight have people carried before? Im only talking about the rear rack, not in side panniers.

I always seem to have room to carry more but dont due to the weight restriction.

When carrying a tent, 2 roll mats, 2 sleeping bags and a stove thats pretty much my weight restiction full (yes I have crap heavy items...that I slowly intend to replace)...but until I do Im stuck with this weight limit. Can I increase it to say 20kgs? will the bike rack cope. Last thing I want is for things to go wrong when bouncing down a road.

I think, if the rack is standard it may break if overloaded, if pannier racks are fitted which share the same mounts as the rack then the weight maybe higher as the loading gets spread out more.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

The plastic rear rack of the RD07 & RD07A do have a habit of breaking if overloaded

There are several ways of reinforcement, I have seen owners bolting reinforcement bars underneath the rack to keep it from breaking.

I carried a half sized jerry can of fuel with no problems. 10 litres strapped onto the rack plus an angle iron bracket to keep it from sliding about. Did that for a month including off tarmac.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Just a thought - have you actually weighed your luggage or are you guessing its weight ? You might be overestimating it ? 20kgs is a lot of luggage !

If you are really carrying 20kgs of stuff as per previous post I think you need to think about other methods to spread it about the bike.

I have carried a bench lathe sat on a sheet of plywood over the givi rack for around 30 miles without a problem. Not long distance, but nothing broke. I have just read the original post about traveling 2 up, i cant comment on that .

    Re: Rear rack weight limits

they all have that, not just @Ts.
i think the 10kg limit is a thing honda put on for litigation purposes, ie if they have destruction tested some to 75kg and tell you the limit is 50kg, there will always be a few in the production run with faults and someone eventually will have one break at 49.5kg and sue them, so they say 10kg. its very american. ive loaded mine right up with no problems, if you think about it, if the rack has a 10kg limit and the honda topbox and assorted metalwork that goes with it must be at least 5kg, that doesnt leave much official load capacity does it?

I agree with Dave, the load recommended is the Honda insurance umbrella
Just remember the more weight on the back the lighter the front becomes and handling starts to become an issue

Yep, weighed the bag (how sad am I) and went we went to Galloway it was 15kg...remember, that was for 2 of us. I was just wondering if I could extend this to say 20kg's.
