    Rusted RD07A Rear (Shock) Suspension

    Hi,

I bought my Africa Twin about a month ago. It has been standing for a few years. The rear shock is completely rusted and all seals are shot.

My question is as follows: is it worth it having it restored and rebuilt with a stronger spring etc, or would I be able to pick up a fairly decent shock either new or used on ebay for more or less the same price as the restoration.... If so, what should i be looking for?

Trying not to break the bank in my rebuild.

    Thanks.

Depends on what suspension people you have locally - in the UK this would cost £100-140

Next up the spectrum would be Hagon Shock Absorbers or whatever equivalent

02 RD07a RWB, Powerbronze tall screen, Remus Grand Prix, TT crash bars, TT pannier frame, Zega style panniers, Alpos top box,TT bar risers, TT headlamp guard, Heated grips, mainstand, Heidenau K60s for road and light offroad, TKC80s for the dirty stuff, Scottoiler, Autocomm, TT Zumo mount, Zumo 550 and most of all A BIG GRIN !!! Oh, and a very nice RD04 HRC coloured Marathon Replica

The OE shock for the bike can be rebuilt and refurbished, it's better than some of the aftermarket options out there and at least you know what your getting which can't be said buying 2nd hand.

I had the oe shock for my 03 refurbished and have been impressed with the results.

That looks very much like my used and abused shock. hahaha.....

Ok, so i will refurbish mine. Would it be necessary to upgrade the spring? or are there any other upgrades to be done on the shock while it is stripped?

    Thank You

If rider and luggage weights are outside the "average" you may want to consider upgrading the oe spring, as Showa springs have a decent reputation I left mine as is although it's possible to also fit a progressive rear spring if you wanted to.

As far as upgrading the internals a competent suspension bod would do that with the rebuild.
