    Exhaust Removal and Replacement

Got my exhaust off for the Center Stand today without too much drama. One of the bolts on my 11 year old exhaust clamps was rusted, but was eventually persuaded to break free after a good soak in PB Blaster. One of my new Venom exhaust clamp bolts broke though. It's less than a year old. I think I may have over tightened it on the install though.

How tight do the header nuts need to be when reinstalling the exaust? I'm still trying to get the old gaskets out using the screw driver method. I've got the OEM kit with the black gaskets. I'd like to have the copper ones Wemoto sells. Any suggestions on additional PM to do while the exhaust is off? Thanks!

27NM for the headers I think

I've just had my exhaust off and I really struggled getting the old gaskets out but they did come off eventually, getting the exhaust back on was the hardest part though, the back nut on the front header was incredibly hard to get to bite onto the stud because (I think) the first couple of threads in the nut are a bit worn and coupled with an (as yet) unsquashed gasket meant that I was messing about all bloody day and in the end I used a new Nylock nut just so I could get it together for work the next day, obviously the nylon will have burnt off by now but it's still on for now.

The reason for me taking the exhust off in the first place was only to paint it with VHT in black and to be honest I wish that I hadn't bothered!

The front gasket came out without a problem, but the rear is proving difficult. What is VHT?

Take a very small screwdriver (ca. 2mm) and drive it squarely into the surface of the gasket; donīt even try using the screwdriver as a lever between the cylinder outlet and the seal or some other odd methods. If you push it into the surface, it will come right out.

Torque for the 4 nuts is 27 Nm. Honda manual gives following sequence for tightening: Rear outer, rear inner, front outer, front inner nut.

I usually put the gaskets in with some copper paste, so the gaskets will stay flat in place when assembling the exhaust pipes.

    Cheers

Actually - what *black* gaskets??? The Honda gaskets for the cylinder outlets are copper-coloured.

Not the ones I got in my OEM kit. They are the same as those that came out as well. Very dark/black.
