It sounds like you might have dislodged the brake light switch wires, but they do become corroded over time as well. It's most likely that or contacts within the switch, or possibly the wiring from the switch (but much less likely). I've usually been successful at stripping and repairing these switches - have a look, it might be something you can easily tackle.

I've only had my AT for 6 months and the front brake has never activated the brakelight. I'll have to have a look at mine too.

Oooh! That I take it you haven't had to MOT it yet - it would fail without a working switch. The wires on my XL600VK switch were always getting pulled off, mainly when I took the stone deflector off....

Don't worry if it is the switch that's broken. It's cheap and takes a few minutes to change. In fact, quick to remove from any available sports bike in a carpark (summer only though). Take a large friend though.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

You're right Stig (or is that My Lord ) I haven't had to MOT it yet. Investigated the problem this afternoon and have found that the switch is b*ggered and remains so despite liberal WD40ing. Ordered a new one from Dave Silver, £7 plus the VAT and post

You can call me your highness if you like, but 'Git' normally does just as well! Glad you managed to find a genuine one - remarkable how wet-intolerant bike electrical components tend to be. The stuff ship's chandlers sell has to be good enough for a wet environment, I wonder why bike stuff isn't. Ah! Of course. It's a) because 'nobody' rides in the wet; b) they want us to buy a new bike ever year or so (before the corrosion really sets in) and c) cost, because properly proofing a brake light switch (a safety feature) would double the cost of the bike in the first place. Please forgive my cynicism!

The brake light switch on the Triumph used to give me endless trouble, so I got into the habit of giving it a squirt of WD40 every time it got a proper wash (every week or two in winter, much less in summer). Performed perfectly since.

My previous Honda (VFR750) did nigh on 100,000 miles (that's 160,000km to you furrin types) and never gave an hassle though.

Some Hondas are more equal than others?
