    Fuel gauge/fuel range/fuel pump

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and hope to be picking up my Twin in a week or so, and I have some quick and dumb questions which I suspect have been done to death before..

    1. Does the Twin actually have a fuel gauge ? How do you know when to refill before it conks - does it have a reserve ?

    2. I'm a Paddy and will have about 5.5 hours to bomb from Bournemouth to Holyhead to try and catch the last ferry, the AA website says this takes over 6, but I'm guessing that's for cars. But from what I read the fuel consumption plummets when thrashing along at slightly suspect speeds, so about how much could I expect to get from a full tank ?

    3. This Twin is a '01 and I'm wondering if that year suffers from the dodgy fuel pumps ? I've already had two rectifiers blow on my Blackbird on hols and I don't want a fuel pump packing in when I'm off in Kazakstan or wherever in the future.

    Thanks and regards,
    Paddy (honest!).

    Hi Paddy,

I am reasonably new to the AT as well but a couple of the questoins I can answer.

The 01 model doesnt have a fuel light but has reserve, mileage wise I get 170 miles to a tank (before reserve) and that is strictly in town driving. Some folks here reckon they get 200+ per tank with motorway and a road driving.

Dunno about the dodgy fuel pump mines a 98 and it hasnt blown yet.

BTW Is the bike your getting the snazzy blue one I have seen on biketrader? Braided hoses, comfort seat etc?

If it is well done looked a nice machine!!.

Hope you make the ferry in time

The fuel pump repair file is now found under ARTICLES.

It contains a way to save the pump from being toast...

Many thanks for all the replies guys (I'm presuming you are all guys!).

Rossco - it is indeed the blue one from Bournemouth. Mighty fine sleuthing Sherlock !

Banger - You weren't at the Draoicht Dubh rally near Dundrum in Tipp recently were you ? I was dribbling over a Twin there, don't see very many around these parts.

    Re: Fule gauge/fuel range/fuel pump

Does the Twin actually have a fuel gauge ?
    No.

How do you know when to refill before it conks - does it have a reserve ?
    Yes.

Depends on your route. If you take the A5 it'll take longer than you think, but a great ride (in the dry during the day). The longer route via the north coast of Wales is motorway/dual carriageway all the way to the port.

But from what I read the fuel consumption plummets when thrashing along at slightly suspect speeds, so about how much could I expect to get from a full tank ?
@180 miles to reserve (18 litres) you should get 250 miles from the tank (25 litres).

This Twin is a '01 and I'm wondering if that year suffers from the dodgy fuel pumps ?
    Yes.

    Paddy (honest!)
    Is there any other type?

Hiya Phoenix. Many thanks for the welcome. Great idea about the festival, that's usually on in the middle of August and can be great craic indeed. I understand there's also plenty of trails/green lanes in the nearby Burren to beat around on. Would you think there might be many interested, and do the members here organise rideouts ?
