    Rd04 summer project

Ok folks, collected new gaskets, seals, o-rings etc today (originals), frame fully stripped, with all nuts & bolts bagged & tagged, digi-camera worked overtime (just in case) ID plate off, & plenty of bits ready to go to the powder-coaters. Need to get new chain sliders, oil, filter, 3/4 grease nipples to fit into swing arm linkage & weld a big foot to the stand. DIDZVM2 chain, new orig front sprocket, supersprox rear, mosfet reg/rec are on the shopping list... but not just yet. Rothmans decals sourced but not acquired. So time for R n R up in the lakes in gf's lotus before she goes to the classic at Le Mans next week... can't go... got things to do.... snigger...

Size: 193.5 KB cases split for piece of mind, no metal/crap/filings, oil ways clear, oil pump within specs. Looked like a washed dog had been sucked in the oil pump filter though... (hairs?).

rebuild on hold, some fecker borrowed my threadlock, geardrum stopper bolt stops play.... bugger! Did afew checks on on bits, all well within spec. I forgot to do the gear-selector forks (1990 35k unconfirmable ,apart from mot's)... hope this doesn't return & bite me in the arse.

what colour are the side cases, bronze? mag side could do with a little touch-up.

Reet.... Big foot welded on & grease nipples fitted, so first thing tomorrow... off to Powder coaters with frame & bits !!! Saw an old school mate yesterday, has a chroming shop in yorkshire, he offered to do my frame... tempted... but no. So the powder coaters, found one & that i'm happy with the quality & price, stripped, blasted & double coated. Shall ask about laquering too. Still pondering doing engine cases, rear linkage & swing-arm. Engine sorted, alternator taken off for ease of refit. So i've a week to spray the engine, forks & to try this....

& then reinforce with bit of fibre-glass on the back.
Can't wait so i can post what some of you've been posting for ages...

"guess what the postman delivered today".

    Re: Rd04 summer project

    Busy weekend,

Forks - 320 sanded, 2 coats of high-build primer, 3 coats spray, 2 lacquer... lovely.

Yokes - wire wheeled to metal, 1 coat etching primer, 2 high-build primer, 3 spray, 2 lacquer... lovely.

Engine side cases - Gone to powder-coaters (discovered today, boss is ex-biker!!! doing my stuff himself... properly!!!) gets better!

Plastics - Using Plastech (like Q-Bond), cheap dremmel, sand paper. Cracks, big & small all sorted. And 2 pieces that had broken off, (thought they were no-hopers) fixed back on & pretty solid. Very happy with product, simple & easy!

Next... using old gaskets & spare casings, clean, slight sanding, & acetone the engine, ready for VHT spray. Then rear linkage, wire wheeled to metal, prep & spray. Plastics... reinforce back of crack repairs with fibre-glass tissue, plastic filler & sand down fronts of plastics. Rest & listen to GF's 6 day jaunt to the le mans track in the lotus. (whilst testing/coaxing/quizzing her about a good sprayer) she's a Rodder, in house favours.

Flippin' 'eck Foz, when you've finished, is it OK if I drop my old banger round for a spruce up?

    Re: Rd04 summer project

Hi Foz, I did alot of plastic welding on my RD04 front fairing and side panels, if you weld the back side first and get the shape, then do exactly the same on the face side you will not need to mess with fiberglass mine as been dropped on mumerous occations off road and all is still strong. I used grp plastic piping from B&Q cut into long thin slithers as welding rods and a gas soldering iron, really easy when you get into it. My mate who painted the bike for me said I had done a better job than he would have done and I saved a fortune in the proccess. I practiced by cutting the pipe in half then re-welding it and testing strength.
    Regards Tez
