numpty wire question

Might sound like a stupid question, but I'm a complete mong when it comes to wiring.

I'm bodging my unobtainable starter solenoid wiring connector that always bloody melts. I need a few short lengths of wire for my bodge, going from the connectors within the destroyed block onto the 4 connectors on top of the solenoid. What sort of wire should I be using? I know the basic rule that I want to use a heavier wire than I need. Only problem is I've got no idea how heavy it needs to be. Any suggestions? I don't want to put in too light a wire and cause more problems.
