I am interested in both - can you post more info on that?

No problem. A other AT rider made 1 and i got his technical drawing
I made somewhat different mountingbrackets but used the measurements he gave me. It hooks into the 2 duct under the light and is only held by 1 screw that holds the top fairing. Put a somewhat longer screw in there with some rubber rings.

Used 3 mm steel wire for the rim and used 1.5 mm thick fencewire. The squares are 20 x 20 mm

Drew the shape on a wooden board and nailed nails around the shape. Bent the 3mm wire around this and welded it. Put the fencewire in place and soldered it onto the 3mm wire. Made some brackets which are welded into place. Test fitted a couple of times. When it was right i spraypainted it with white Hammerite.

It will be clearer how i mounted it when i post some pics.

    The pics

The bottom brackets are 2 hooks that hook onto the bodywork. A crossbar is welded between them with a piece of rubber around it. To mount it, you hook it on the bodywork first en then turn it upwards. The rubber on the crossbar makes sure the hooks are tightly gripping the bodyworks. On the top just tighten the screw. and voila, a headlampprotector.

Finally got myself round to building one. Tikka - can you post the technical drawing you mentioned?

    Cheers

I really really don't want this to sound rude, it's a genuine question - I'm assuming you guys have figured out something that I'm still ignorant of.

What does this headlight protector protect against? Looks as if stones would probably get through (maybe not all of them, but then how effective are the wires on a dartboard at stopping the darts?). In a drop, an impact bad enough to damage the lights would bend the protector.
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle

What you are missing here is that the it will give you a huge street cred and your bike will look like a real Mad Max creature from the desert.

On a serious note - I'm not worried about the small chippings, just the big rocks which can easily smash your headlight. I've been hit by them before and they left marks on my visor and lid. Had it hit the headlight, it would have been smashed.

And since I don't want to give my hard earned cash to Mr Touratech, I'd rather build one myself.

I was reluctant to suggest that might be the reason...

So, what you need is to add spikes and stuff, and try to get a few small furry animals impaled on them. Maybe you could score a Traffic Warden's hat
