    speedo gearbox

    Hi Folks,

Here is a question for all you haynes manual owning folks, I need to replace the speedo gearbox as mine is shafted. Does anyone know the right part number or an outlet for one?

Not too bad having no speedo as long as I count my gears properly coz I know that 30mph is about 4000 rpm in 2nd.

The gearbox itself is fearsomely expensive. Fortunatly you probably only need to replace the wee tabbed washer (a few quid) or the nylon gear (about a tenner, AFAIR).

(Apologies if you already looked into this and found it is the gearbox itself...)

    I found that in 3rd, mph = rpm/100
    i.e. 3000rpm = 30mph, 5000rpm = 50mph.

Handy, considering that (if you really have to) you can use 3rd gear in about any posted speed limit.

    Icenian,

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I need the whole gearbox as the gear that joins to the tabbed is moving round in the gearbox .

You can have it - your need is greater than mine! Never buy a used AT from me though; the true mileage is probably much higher than it appears........

If my funds were better I'd stump up for a new one at £58, but as it is I'll go for repairing the one I have for now. It looked like there was more than one speedo drive on there. Maybe hope for us both?

    Good luck!

That's the large white nylon gear? That comes out and can be replaced separately. For much less money than the gearbox. I think the idea is that this gear (being plastic) is supposed to break, saving the gearbox, if anything prevents the speedo drive turning.

The separate bits you can buy are the tabbed washer (sits alongside the wheel bearing), the big white nylon gear (sits inside the gearbox), and the gearbox itself which has just a small (brass I think) gear that drives the cable (this is in line with the cable, and can't be seen until you get the big nylon gear out). If it is the wee brass gear then you're right, it's the whole gearbox I think.

    Icenian,

Yup its the brass gearing itself so the whole kit and kaboodle it seems. Dave silver spares very kindly gave me a quote including vat and postage the wrong side of 80 quid. So the ebay one is looking better every hour.

    Hi folks,

Seeing as I got robbed on e-bay for the 2nd hand speedo gearbox, does anyone have any reccomendations where I can buy the part.

David Silver have offered me a quote of 81GBP including postage, which is making me doubly upset that I was outbid buy a pound on that part.

    Ta
