    Ignition Barrel

Just to top off a really cr*p week at work, I left the office yesterday & without looking, proceeded to insert my ingition key into a big gaping hole where the ignition barrel used to be. F**K!
It seems that some dirty W****R had attempted to seal my bike by very neatly removing the barrel & steering lock but had been foiled by the immobiliser. HA! (wheres that damn emoticom giving the finger?). And this was in broad daylight, right across the road from the main office entrance with people constantly comming & going!
So, my weekend is now going to be filled with the location and fitting of a new ignition barrel. This has been discussed on this site before but I cant find the thread. I understand its a prick of a job. Any pointers?

    Cheers.
P.S. on the upside, they didnt get the bike, and I got fantastic recovery service - which was a surprise.

They usually just lift it into the back of a van, glad they were foiled.

Bike thieves should be put in stocks for public humiliation

By the way what recovery do you have?

I didn't have that much trouble, the hard bit (I thought) was going to be removing the security bolts that hold the barrel to the top yoke. It was actually quite easy. I used a centre punch on the bolts which have domed heads. Just by hitting them slightly off centre a groove appears that you keep hitting till the thing starts turning. They are quite soft. I replaced them with 2 allen bolts I had lying about.

The replacement barrel was a pattern for a CBR600. Slip off the old plastic block connector using a small scredriver to compress the springs on the terminals. Slide the old one over the brass terminals and it plugs straight in. It costs about £30 instead of £115 plus VAT.

See link for right part to order

The bolts are actually allen bolts so I presume it has been done before. They were loctited in though - buggers to get out but at least I didnt need to take the top yoke off. Will get a new switch ordered on Monday morning. The biggest pain is the fact that I wil have to take the tube to work on Monday & Tuesday . I will have to calm myself by playing "the underground song" over & over on the way.

    By the way:
bbbikeshop.co.uk also have the switches in stock - along with lots of other bits.
It is impossible to get the front fairing off in 1 piece if you have crashbars fitted.

You've obviously bought the wrong crashbars. They must be whoppers!!

Just as an afterthought to this thread, as I had caused to get a replacement last week.

The patternparts.net replacement barrel that is for the CBR6 is fine once you've modifed the wiring into the outgoing connector block.

The only 'problem' as such is that the barrel itself is not as tall as the one on an RD04, so you will no longer be able to clip on the cowl that surrounds the barrel.

Also, on the RD04 at least, you'll need to dig out those rusty (or go and buy some) Torx head tools, as that's how it's secured (and they're threadlocked for extra frustration).

Be careful ... the bolts are typical Honda quality, ie it won't take much to round them off, then you're going to be in trouble!!

    Re: Ignition Barrel

Spooky... I was about to post when I read this Parallel Universe story ...

I got up at 7, went for a pee, let the dog out .. BIKE GONE .. !! .. GATES OPEN ... staggered down drive, looked down road, bike further up on sidestand on pavement, PHEW PHEW and double PHEW, ignition barrel gone but otherwise ok.

    Immobiliser saved day ... bring back the birch ! {Oh God, turning into my Father again}

My mate came over and has been driving me to breakers and talking me through the dreaded LecTrickery ...

Now I've a replacement ignition in place but no ignition lights no starter in fact only the indicators work when the immobiliser is activated ...

We've checked the fuses under side panels (both sides) and they looked ok...

    Getting stuck now ...

    Anyone ??

Check the big (30amp I think) master fuse, which is located under the connector onto the solenoid.
