    is it the fuel pump?

Got a little bit of a scare last night - my AT stopped working in the middle of the North Circular. Luckily it wasn't that far from home, so I could push it the rest of the way.

There's about 10l of petrol in the tank, starter and battery are fine, but the engine would not start.

It had a similar problem before - the engine would stop, but after 5-10 min it'd be fine. Flushing the fuel system with a special petrol additive fixed it. This time it seems more permanent. and I suspect the fuel pump.

Is there an easy way of telling if the fuel pump is b@ggered without taking it off?

You should be able to feel it "buzzing" when it operates. It will make a bit of noise as well. I have the impression the pump cuts out when gravity is enough to feed the carbs so a non-working pump is not necessarily broken, but not entirly sure about that because the pump on my bike was already dying when I got it. A few knocks on the pump with a blunt object sometimes make it jump back into life.

My advice is to get a Pierburg (for details do a search on this site or drop me a PM). I'd do that even when the pump is NOT broken

Find the relay under left cover that controls the pump. Dismantle the contact and make a short between the Black/Blue and Black/Red wire. Now the pump should have power so if the carbs are empty the pump should start ticking. If not open the cover on the pump and check the contact switch. Read about the pump in Articles section. If the fuse for the pump is out you should not be able to use the starter so thats not the problem... If the pump is running ok with this test you reconnect the contact and run the starter. If the pump still works there is something else wrong... If not, the fuel cut off relay is suspected of foul play.

p.s Don't forget to have the ignition turned on... d.s

Try cleaning the points, usually works on mine and only takes 5 minutes. I also carry a bit of tube flared at each end which I can use to bypass the pump if it plays up. Assuming you have enough fuel you can get home.

    Well tjompen,
Your reply I have printed and placed in my manual.
I know from past events that the fuel pump makes one hell of a noise when the tank is empty

If it is the relay, I have one for sale: I replaced mine last year when I thought it to be broken (unfortunately it was the pump). These little buggers cost over 30 quid from David Silver, you can have mine for £12 + P&P (that's for the new one, I am running the old one again on mine).

If you are not sure but still want to try, I don't mind sending it to you to find out: Just return it if it does not help (pay me P&P, probably less than a quid), or send me a cheque if it does.
I also have a used pump (original model): It works but is not reliable. Maybe handy for parts, and it's free if you don't mind again to pay postal cost.

All the best, I know how depressing these pumps can be

No fuelpump? Or a different (better) one?

I am trying to remember if my XRV650 or NTV650 had a fuel pump. If it had, it was probably a better one otherwise I would have remembered

    NTV, yes.

As I recall from my old NTV...

    Cheers,
