    Heavy man...

I'm taking the AT over to Hungary in April and I've now put Touratech panniers on.

My question is, how much weight i.e. Rider + Pillion + Luggage can you carry on the bike? I couldn't find anything in my Haynes manual..

Plus when the bikes loaded up - How does it handle?

Fully loaded I weigh in at:
    Me = 100kg
Pillion = 50 to 60kg (depending on mood)
bike = est 210kg (incl. racks/bars etc, excl fuel)
luggage = 40kg. This is from memory & includes tank bag + side bags, t.tech panniers, top box + tent strapped to top, couple of litres of water in platypus type bladders.
All up 400 ish kilos. Probably way over any manufacturers spec. As for suspension, the rear shock is std with pre-load wound right up (probably still a bit too soft) and I have wirth progressive fork springs (+ the std short spring) & 15w oil. This seems to be a good set up for when loaded, there is minimal fork dive under breaking. Handling is surprisingly good although you need to plan your stopping distances a bit further in advance and keep cornering speed down.

    Vacations last summer...
    me, 110 kg
    wife, 65 kg
    bike 220 kg
    luggage, 30 kg
I had 2 panniers with around 10 kg each and a top case with more than 10 kg...
Handling is adequate for doing around 130-140 km/h but I have the fornt and rear spirngs changed to WP.

    PS
I would load the bike up and take it for a run on all types of road, just to find out what load you are happy with.

Who cares as long as you get there safely. Fab city.
Stay out of the table dancing bars - massive ripoff so I'm told.......ahem!
Ask for 'Old man's bar' if you want to pull (you didn't say if pillion was your missus).

Have you ever seen the way they load up a Honda C90 in Vietnam? If you work on that theory, Honda build quality etc. You should be able to get a small village on an Africa Twin!!!

Not sure about staying out of the table dancing bars. My pillion (friend) was a dancer so she might want to make a few bob along the way!

She's also offered to model a xrv.org.uk T-Shirt if someone sends me a logo.. wet t-shirt style apparently!

I think I'll have a practise run first, then see if I need to ask her to lose some weight

Most bikes (from Honda C90 to Goldwing) have a recommended maximum carrying capacity of between 460 and 475 lbs. I guess there has to be a bit of a safety factor built in there too, so probably 500lbs total would be OK?
