How often are the wheel bearings changed?

When they are damaged or before you go on a very very long journey.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

My rear wheel bearings have been changed once since new at about 30,000 miles. I added extra grease to double sealed replacements and they are still going strong (touch wood)

I just went to a bearing place in Bow Triangle, waved cash and asked for double sealed bearings. Cost about £15 for the back and £10 for the front. Think they were Kyoy or something like that. I always lever out the shields and put a little extra grease in them before replacing shield. This seems to greatly increase their life.

Just got mine of eBay for a £20 . How do you remove the shield from the bearing? Is there a trick to it like leaving in the freezer and heating it up, or just use the old trusty screwdriver?

They just pop out with a little encouragement from a small flat bladed screwdriver. Might take a few goes but you'll get the knack. Then put a little extra bearing grease in and rotate the bearing to spread it evenly. Pop the seal back on and push with your fingers and it reaseats. repeat foor the other side.

As for bearing numbers, I put those on the fiche part of the site, but someone here had different bearings in their back wheel so don't take it as gospel.
