Just a small update on the "Which Oil" question...
A while ago I posed a similar question, because I had been given a quantity of very high quality, Fully Synthetic Oil.
Anyway, I never really got a definitive answer on whether to use it or not, so I just thought, "Oh what the hell" and did.
I am very happy to report that using 15w/50 Fully Synthetic (Ester based) has had no detrimental effect on the bike, or specifically the clutch so far. I've done about 2000 miles since the oil change, at all speeds, and she's (XRV650) sweet as a nut.
Hope this helps
Bob
I have just put this expensive fully synthetic 10w/40 in yesterday.
It has this ester thingy stuff in it and was recomended by my friends
at HGB Honda's.
Only done 20 miles so far though but are going on a blast to the coast tomorrow so that should sort it.

What is "Ester based"?
Is that a Jewish thing?![]()
Apparently ester-based oil was designed by someone called Esther.
It is quite safe to use, except in a salty environment, so blasts down to the seaside could cause a few problems.
Apart from that, it's great!!
Incidentally, I read an article in this weeks MCN that said something along the lines of...if you base your engine oil changes on duration rather than mileage (i.e you don't do many miles a year), using synthetic is recommended, as it's much more stable over time than mineral based oil.
I just used it 'cause it was free, and I'm a tightwad!!!
Cheers
Bob
I was always told an advantage of true synthetic oil is the lack of polymers needed to keep up the viscosity: Polymers break down due to mechanical stress, so you'd think mineral oils DO wear as a result of mileage and no so much time?Originally Posted by BobA

It is difficult to figure out what to believe.![]()
I'd say oil of the oily sort is still the best. Especially when it's free![]()
