    Electrics???

    Whats going on here?....

Last night I pushed the bike across the road into the garage, ignition on, lights off. I then flicked the lights on to see where I was going - everything went dead, no lights, trip meter, brake light, ignition lights - nothing. I checked battery terminals and fuses but all seemed ok. Then, after a bit of head scratching and cursing - with the ignition ON, the alarm armed itself (as they do after 30 secs) indicating that in fact the ignition was OFF. More head scratching & cursing & a few more flicks of the switch, everything was back to normal. "Horray!" I shouted to myself, until everything died again a few seconds later (possibly after flicking the light switch?).

Anyway - I immediately thought that the connector for the new ignition barrel (under the air box) could have worked loose. I will check tonight.

Is there anything else it could be? What else should I check?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I had a problem like this, traced it back to a loose wire under the barrel, just a bit of welding to sort it. If it happens again, try turning the bars and see if everything lights up again.

Traced everything last night & found no loose connectors etc.
But it has had a bit of a meltdown at the connector block leading into the starter relay. I basically had to break the connector to get it off because it had fused itself together. A couple if the wires inside were shorting so I am guessing that may be the cause of the problem. The main fuse (30A) however was fine. Now to source a starter relay and connector block.

Problem solved. New starter relay £39!! + VAT + postage from david silver. Forget the block connector - they come as part of the wiring loom. Salvaged the fuse cover off the old one & used female spade connectors for the wire connections, & lots of insulation tape.

Note that it wasnt actually the starter relay that had failed - just the plug on top. It looked like it had been heating up over some time.

Now the trip dosent work at all - the backlight does though.

Back to studying the wiring diaram I suppose.

When you say the trip don't work, do you mean it's hung, showing all figure 8s. This happened to me after I lost my ignition switch and replaced it. It just needs resetting. It's on here somewhere how to do it, a search should find it. I think you have to disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes then reconnect or something similar.

If it's totally blank I'll shut up and sit down, forget I said anything.

Its totally blank. So shut up and sit down
But then it comes on again, and resets.

But then it goes off again.

    And then ...

...and so on in a very random fashion. Which makes me think it is a power supply problem. The backlight is on a totally different circuit so would explain why that is still working.

I'm standing up again. I've had this as well. If you take the screen off and look behind and under the trip meter pod, there is a metal plate that 4 or 5 block connectors sit in. They supply the clocks, trip meter, indicators etc. On the one for the trip meter, salt had corroded one of the wires where it went into the back of the bottom block connector. This was sometimes touching sometimes not and used to play up in the rain when I went past a big lorry and got sprayed.

I just by passed the single wire with a bullet connector and digits were restored.

Have a look and whilst you're there see which wire will be next.

That sounds like the culprit. Initially it was doing it only in damp conditions, now it does it all the time. Will look tonight.

    Cheers.

OK Yen, I give up! How do you get the female fittings out of the block connector? None of them look too bad but I wouldnt mind taking them out to have a decent look. I dont want to cut & re-crimp them if it turns out not to be the problem.
The other thing I thought it might be is the connection to the trip sensor. Does anyone know where the trip sensor is?
