Going out to play this weekend...

I know I shouldn't be posting in this forum, but I'll give it a go hoping the moderators won't move it, 'cos the Rideouts forum is just too quiet and I need the info by tomorrow.

The Ordnance Survey Map 166 for Luton & Hertford is in front of me and I'm trying to find some trails for this weekend. Can anyone recommend a nice and easy place to go tomorrow?

The only thing I know is that the -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ line is what I'm looking for on the map, ant that there might be TROs, which should be posted on the spot. Is this all I need to know?

    Thanks

Thats the lines you are looking for. If you want I can direct you to some great routes in the Guildford area. Unfortunately I cant get out for a play this weekend, we will be doing bike prep for our trip, but if you want to call in I will lend you my maps.

You should be able to ride on:

    Byways
BOATs - Byways open to All Traffic, +-+-+-+-
Road Used as public paths - Long dash, then dot, _._._._

With roads, if the road outline is dashed, then that means the road is unfenced..

So there's a bit more than the tracks you are looking for..

I've joined the TRF and will have more info on this stuff soon..

As Fewtrees stated join the TRF. to find out all about ROW stuff, If that buffoon Micheal and the rest of his cronnies have their way(if they get in again ) we want have ANYwhere to ride legally by the end of the year

Which maps did you buy with MemoryMap - Explorer or Landranger? Quite happy to buy it as it looks a good product and I have a Pocket PC with GPS built in, so should work a treat!

    Some words of caution:

    a) BOATs are the only tracks marked on OS maps that you can definately ride (apart when a TRO is posted at both ends).

    b) RUPPs may or may not be legal, the only way to be sure is to contact the local council and check the definitive map.

    c) White roads may or may not be legal (sometimes farm tracks and people's driveways are marked as white roads), the only way to be sure is to contact the local council and check the list of streets.

This is the big problem with trail riding in the UK. There's too much FUD and too many sources of information. Which is why joining the TRF is such a good move. But even then the onus is on the rider to make sure the track he is about to ride is legal. And that involves going down to the council and talking with the Rights of Way group and marking up a map. But even the TRF will hold that sometimes the definitive map is wrong, and higher rights exist than are marked, which throws b) and sometimes c) into doubt.

    Clear?
