Thanks for all the great advice guys. I'm feeling much happier about going ahead - although I will be doing some double checking based on al lteh tips you've given me.
For those who asked about the price, I'm getting the bike for around £2,300. It seems to be in excellent nick. The old MOT's going back to 2001 show milegaes consistent with the current 11,000 ( which I think answers the point about Miles/kilometers).
If there's another AT rider near they may be happy to come along and give some advice. After all they will know what to look out for.
I would but its a little far to go for me.![]()

don't know if it helps but mine is a mega cheap (£1,000) 1988 RD03, 650cc import, it has what apears to be a genuine 46,000km (30,000ish miles) and runs real peachy (apart from the hole in the collector box), if you get the usual evidence (MOT's, service history, still some rubber left on the footpegs, etc) then don't worry, these bikes are either ultra high been round the world 20 times or just potter around a bit when it was sunny types (like me), you're not looking at a gixer/ blade-runner (nutter with no right hand control, thrash the bollocks off it every day types).
Ride tall, have fun and watch out for the Audi's (the new Volvo drivers).
Live long, be happy, send us the pics!

p.s. Scotland is a "big country" be a bit more specific, I have spent many happy days in the "borders" and could easily be persuaded to visit towards the end of the month! + have you considered contacting XRV JIm or any of the other nutters on the Haggis Run!
I think £2300 is a bargain for an 11k / '97 AT, if I were to sell one myself I'd start with a grand more. But who would want to sell a bike like that?![]()
I paid £1900 for my '94 ('95 1st reg) 2 years ago on eBay, with 34k-miles, front brake in need of revision, and a cracked side panel but otherwise in good condition, which I considered quite a bargain as well.
Cheers - and thanks once again for all the good advice. You'll be pleased to hear that I've taken the plunge and put a deposit on the bike. Had a 3 hour refresher course today on a 125cc, and got a 3 hour lesson booked on a 500cc for next week. Once thats done ( and my finance somes through) I'll be out on the Lanarkshire roads - so didn't say i didn't warn you!!

Excellent, last time I was up that way on a bike was 20 odd years ago!, brilliant run up from Cheshire to Oban, the A74 was just an ordinary A road then, must go up again sometime, really nice stretch from Glasgow up round Loch Lomond up thro' Stirling, and then thro' the glens to Oban.
The AT is great for these types of road, nice sweeping bends, wide open countryside, relax take it easy and enjoy the ride.
I ride a lot around South Cheshire and Derbyshire, similar countryside, (but on a smaller scale) and much narrower roads![]()
