My bike is just two years old and the paint on the RHS crankcase is bubbling. If I rub it it flakes off. Should I worry, and what can I do to stop it getting worse? The bike is probably a month or so out of warranty :(

Hi Mark,
Should you worry?....... that depends how much your worried about it. It will not affect the performance of the bike at all. It may have had a rough couple of winters, or have you owned it from new? If you want to correct it you can take the cover off and rub it back and repaint it and laquer it. It should not do this being such a new bike I know and I am personally really fussy about these things.
My bike is six years old and the left side cover is a bit corroded but bearing in mind the age I can live with it. If the rest of the bike is mint and thats how you like your bikes then get it repainted and then everything will be ok.

Just out of warranty. I think if you get intouch with Honda they may fix it in good faith. Ask nicely.

Had it from new, and it stood outside for the first winter. Since last Ocober it's been garaged, though still damp and all the alloys have gone furry. I'm not hugely bothered by the paint but it's a sign of things to come. I also have rust spots around places such as the forks, OE exhaust (now off the bike) and suspension linkages, but it still looks nice from afar. I guess it's just the 'shiny new bike' effect. I recall my Transalp looked sad close-up after four years, but I didn't know what sad meant until I saw it parked in Soho Square six months after I sold it. Holy cow, it had been despatched to death and looked like it had been parked in a river every night!Originally Posted by Blues N Twos
I don't think I'll bother trying to stretch the warranty. The bike was a dealer import from France and I suspect the reassurances of 'full manufacturer warranty' were hot air and would have been filled by the dealer. Said dealer is now 30 miles away (I've moved) and hence any repair deal is likely to be protracted and involve much inconvenience.
And when I asked about the warranty on the bash plate when mine was in warranty I was told that I should clean it every day and wipe it down after each ride and therefore I wasn't covered!!

Try RS Paint they do the exact colour match, also you get etch primer top coat plus the lacquer. The numptys at Honda do not know what primer is.
Hi Mark
I've just bought a 98 bike this weekend which has only just over 6000m on the clock. Don't know what the 2 previous owners did with it (not alot of riding i think), but it is immaculate with no rusting or corrosion, and looks as if it's just out of the factory. I think the fact that it has always been garaged has a lot to do with it
Regards
James
Mine's the same both sides. And the frame, and the rest. This has been covered before, but the build quality spoils what would otherwise be a great bike. Mine has ben through a hard winter with me (four years old) but that's no excuse; no car would fall to bits like that. My 1989 Ta was amazing, my 1994 TA not bad (bordering on mediocre), but my 2001 AT is rubbish.

it's not good but i my case i don't think it's any worse than a car of similar year/mileage would be so i'm not too unhappy (in fact i have an s reg daewoo that looks a hell of a lot worse)
if it was like this with 6000 on the clock tho...![]()
