And I've no idea on the piston rings, but if Yen hasn't replaced them yet, I shouldn't worry about it!

Don't worry the rings are not cast, and have a long life. The engine is low revving and has a long life. [ did I just write that, after all my problems on a low milage bike]

I think mine are still okay. Never had an oily spark plug or smoke out of the exhaust. If it does start smoking, I'll blame you's for bringing it up in the first place.

2000 XRV750 (NO 3), I think I'm getting the hang of them now, must fit the centrestand before the back tyre wears out. Damn, the driveshaft bearing wore out first!

I think mine were on the worn side on my 68,000 mile TA - power was down and oil was being used, although that could have been the valve stems. However, I put this down to the K & N filter I fitted at around 40,000. This time I've stuck with OE paper items on my AT, and at 58,000 everything is tip top. That's with oil changes (car 15w40 diesel oil) every 4,000 and oil and filter (Halfords Champion F306) every 8,000.

Whatever else these bikes are, they have good engines.

My 600 TA had completed 137,000 miles when it got run over by a dustcart. I'd sold it to a friend as cheap transport when it had done over 80,000 miles. The bike had been used daily on my, then, 60 mile commute then on his 40 miler. The bike had never burnt any oil and compression was good.

When I was looking stuff about these bikes a few years ago I came across an article someplace stating that TA up to about 1990 had issues with piston rings but that they apparently got it right at Honda after that.

Lord Stig: Was your TA by any chance a '90 or older?

The first one I had was a 1989 which went to (I think) 59,000 without any problems, though the clutch needed replacing when I sold it. I always used standard filters in that, which is one of the reasons I suspect my 1994 model didn't fair so well - I'm blaming the filter rather than the engine being worse from new. All in all, the 1989 model was better in every way - lighter, better built, quieter fairing, somehow more economical, and the rear drum lasted for ever and was no worse than the disk on the VR (though that had a better front caliper for changing the pads).

That's the rev limiter throwing unburnt petrol out the exhaust more than likely
