    Light problem!

    Hi all again!
Need a little advising with headlights.
My low-beams were off after yesterdays ride, and i have not find any problems. Fuses are ok, "light-bulbs" are ok. Where are relays in RD03? Could it be that there is one for low-beams and one for high-beams? High-beams are still running ok, and because both low-beams are off, there has to be some relay or something that gives power to low-beams, right?
Well, i hope someone knows solution for this.
ok ok ok, this bike is 1988 and it has really bad wires also, but i couldnīt find any broken cables or so.

Thanks for your help guys and girls.

Hi, had a similar problem with my RD03 when I got it, whereby the Hi/Lo beam switch worked round the wrong way. Basically, when the lights were on lo beam, the idiot light said they were on hi beam, and vice versa.

Through trial and error, and using a multimeter, I found that there are two relays, one for hi beam, one for lo beam. In my case the wires from the switch had been connected to the wrong relay, so by swapping them around, I got mine to work correctly.

Your problem sounds like the wire from the switch to the relay may be disconnected or broken, or maybe a bad earth, or connection to the relay.

Sorry I can't advise on wire colours, but I don't currently have the bike here or a wiring diagram.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

From memory, both relays are adjacent to each other, but just in front of the clocks, and below the headlamps.

My RD03 was shabby and had been "tinkered with" by the previous owner(just like the RD04 I've just purchased!) so it may be that my relays weren't in the correct locations.

The best way to find them would be to trace the loom that runs from the headlamp switch on the handlebars, and follow it's route to the relays. Again, from memory (but I may be wrong) the wires you are looking for may be brown, grey, and green (but check carefully). That loom should only end up leading to the two headlamp relays, and the flasher relay for the indicators.

Be careful when removing wires, and make a careful note of colours and where they went (use tape and a pen which you can remove afterwards).

The Lo beam relay will have four connections, 1. signal wire in from handlebar switch. 2. 12v source feed to the relay 3. Connection to headlamps. 4. A negative feed to complete the circuit for the relay to function.

Again, all this is from a slightly dysfunctional memory, so be careful and check one wire at a time.

Good Luck, I'm sure it's something really simple.

Turn the ignition on, switch the lights on at the handlebar switch. Flick the button between hi and lo beam and listen for the clicks as the two relays kick in. Search with furrowed brow whilst keeping them clicking. That's how I found mine anyway.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I can't be sure looking at that fiche, it doesn't give enough info.

I think you should find there are only three "little boxes" by the clocks, one will be the indicator flasher, the other two will be for the lights (and will look the same.

That fiche shows the relays as having a multi-connector onto the relays (if thats what they are in the pic) but mine had individual wires with spades(4 in all) connected to each relay.

Yen's advice is sound, ignition on, and flick the switch for the lights on/off to hear the relevant one click, however, if the wire between the switch and the relay is open circuit (disconnected or broken) the relay will not work or click.

The easiest way is to follow the cable from the handlebar switch, along it's route to each component at the other end. Some wires will go to the horn, some to the indicator flasher, the remaining to the headlight relays. Whilst doing this you will probably find a wire hanging off of a nearby connector.

Don't get in too deep, if they just packed up whilst riding, it's hopefully something simple like a wire fallen off.

    Good Luck

    My RD03 is 1988.
Hmm.. sounds interesting that those 12 and 14 are for lights. I disconnect both of those and still my high-beams went on. And somebody did say that those are similar, but mine arenīt. Well, i think i have to go and look by the wires where my relays are.
    Thanks anyway for everyone.

12 is listed as "Relay, Fuel Cut" and 14 is listed as "Check Unit, Pilot Lamp", none of the ones shown on this fiche are listed for the headlamp!
I have just checked through the whole parts list for the XRV650J/K and there is no mention of headlamp relays anywhere!
I have also checked mine and no matter what switch I flick there is no clicking to be heard, I don't think there are any fitted?
have you tried the switch, mine plays up a bit sometimes, it may just be the contacts inside are a bit worn, a good squirt of WD40 and a wiggle of all the switches may help?
