Pattern parts can be OK or can be cr*p while the Honda parts do have implied quality. While replacing seals is easy it's not something you want to be doing again and again...or are you some sort of masochist £25 + VAT seems like a lot for oil seals but I think I'd go for it.

I put 10w oil in mine and dropped the forks 10mm up through the yokes. I works for me but I guess any weight of new oil is going to make a big difference to the grey sludge that's probably kicking around in your fork legs now.

Finally, you will feel a warm glow after doing your forks. This will probably the satisfaction of having 'done it yourself' and cheating a paid mechanic from doing the job...or an adverse reaction to grey sludgy fork oil that you've covered yourself in
About 10 w oil , a mate of mine who's a mechanic told me that if I use 10 w oil it wont pass the oil seals as easy as 5 w oil , it 's a bit more viscous.

Going with it as my bike when its finished will be a low miler .

Choose the oil weight according to the damping characteristics you want. Don't put thicker oil in an attempt to stop fork seals leaking. If the seals are shot, it's true that 10w will leak out slower than 5w but it will still leak out and the seals will still need replacing.

If your mate is a motorcycle mechanic, don't let him wok on your bike

    Ok

All went well . Got both oil seals and dust seals in - biggest problem was getting that barstuard guide bushes into their locations. Didn't like hammering at them so I took the gap out of them by hand squeezing them until there were closed and tapped em in very gently with a hammer and flat head. All in all seam to be good.

Have to say thinking about it should have bought the more expensive seals any way rebuild under way.

Also replaced the points in the fuel pump seams like the most economical option given the price of a new pump.

    Later

lil tip when you undo the top of the forks undo the fork retaining bolt at the bottom too and do remember to take the oil out first, then just let the fork assembly (with a little help from you)pop the seal out.
To repeat what already been said on here be very careful putting the new seals in, useing a pipe with the right diameter makes it a doddle.
    Have fun Paul
