Has anyone changed the gearing on the Africa twin ??
If so what are your thoughts, opinions and recommendations ?
I was thiking of maybe dropping it a sprocket on the front as i never ride at more than 100mph.

Many Greeks have replaced the fornt with one tooth less. You may consider it.
Its depends what you after
Fast acceleration or a lazy ride, less buzy ride .
I put a 40 t on the rear which made for tall gearing 5000 rpm = 80 mph but its still got the acceleration.
One tooth on the front is normally worth about three on the rear.

But I know nothing ......I've sold mine , after 7 yrs .
Whats the standard gearing for an Africa twin ??
I basically want a setup which will give me better torque and acceleration whilst overtaking with full luggage and pillion. As i say, as long as it will do 90mph without ragging its tits off, im happy.
Sounds like he wants a Varadero to me!![]()
But I too, would be interested in any opinions
Varadero.... Paaaah. Ill get one when I trade in dancing shoes for my pipe and slippers![]()
No offence![]()
Hi Guys
A little while back I was looking to put a 17T front on my AT instead of the standard 16T item. Unfortunately it appears that such a beast is no longer available in the UK.
For a while it looked like my only option would be to reduce the rear sprocket but i didnt fancy it as it would probably have meant shortening the chain.
I have however stumbled across a German dealer called Trebes Motoparts (http://www.1st-bikershop.de/) and he sells 17T front sprockets for Euro24.50 including P&P.
I've ordered one and I'll post my findings when I've fitted it.

i take it you want to tame the bike down and go for more low rev top speed for economy ?
I want it the other way round, i want some more grunt and acceleration
Hi
Not sure about the economy bit - some people reckon that you use more fuel accelerating with higher gearing in the lower gears but I do want to try and reduce the revs at M-Way cruising speeds at which I get a tingly buzz through the nether regions!
Dave
Tedmagnum, you sound like a man after my own heart (you won't get it though - I want to live!). I find I'm at odds with most of the other AT owners here in that I like more oomph than flat boring cruising ability. If I wanted that I'd have a car....
I discussed this a fair bit herehttp://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtop...hlight=gearing. Basically, the best set up for me was standard 16 front and 46 rear - the same as an RD04. A 15 front and standard 45 rear is great, but revs out at a real world 99 mph. Even with this set up it was no wheelie machine (but I'm no wheelie merchant), and the mpg was not significantly worse (if affected at all), probably because the gearing to a certain degree counters having to open the throttle wider when battling head winds and going up hill. I'm back on standard gearing which is fine for most situations, and arguably better for my 150 mile round commute. However, I really liked the strong feel of the 15 tooth front. Next time I'll be going for a 16/46 set up, although I'd be tempted to try 16/47 (and 15/46 as I still have the 15 tooth front......).
There are links to suppliers that can help if you follow the above thread.
