    Exhaust 'hole' Question

is it normal for my 'standard' exhaust to have a hole in it (see pic). The hole appears to be precision drilled, about 2-3mm in diameter. Exhaust fumes are coming out - it can get quite choking when pulling up at lights, etc.

Mine's got one too (RD04) and has signs of coking around it, so i guess some gases do come out of there.

My guess is, it's supposed to be there, to allow any condensation/water to drain from the silencer, as it is the lowest point before it connects to the downpipe/intermediate pipe.

Of course, that's just my two'pennyworth, so it may be wrong.

Whilst on an exhaust note (pardon the pun) my bike tends to pop and backfire on the overrun. I suspect there may be a leak in the system somewhere before the silencer, and I'm just wondering if anybody else has experienced this???

    Dear Richie,

Like most boys your age, you are worrying if things you have are abnormal. This is a perfectly normal part of growing up. You are naturally curious to know if other boys are experiencing the same things you are. It can be a lonely, frightening feeling. Let me put your mind at rest once and for all. This hole is perfectly normal and is to allow your errr water emissions out when the engine is cold. Please fret no more on this score.

ps, re the question on the other side of the paper, the one you didn't want published, this does sound unusually shaped to me, please visit your GP nd seek his opinion as soon as the plaster is removed.

I must confess, I stared at the hole for a long time convinced it shouldn't be there. It was only because it was so even I decided it was a properly drilled hole (my bike is so cruddy it was hard to see if it was just a hole caused by corrosion).

    ps

I don't think the large red arrow hanging out of the hole is standard. Please remove this before riding.

Now that you've convinced me that it should be there, perhaps I ought to remove the massive jubilee clip i have plugging it.

Wouldn't want the exhaust to fill with water now would I.................

Yes. In my case the connection of the exhaust to the engine was getting loose. Needed two new gaskets, fixed it.

    Made quite nice bangs though....

    Its fine

Dont worry, It IS meant to be there. It for the draining of condensation / water. The hole is small enough that it wont effect back pressure, flowrate etc. Just forget its there, maybe check its unblocked every few months.
