    unscramble the code

I keep seeing references to people's bikes described as RD07 or 03 and so on, and, possibly because I'm innumerate, I can't fathom these out. Where do these codes come from? All I can find on my registration slip is XRV750-M.

The RD03, 04 and 07 are just the subsequent model-codes, relating to frame / engine numbers. Confusingly, both RD04 and RD07 frames run RD04 engines, although the model-numbers usually relate to the frame codes.
This is a useful link for more information: http://world.altavista.com/babelfish....html&lp=de_en

    Model Codes

    To answer your question.

Basically they were the numbers used to identify the Frame and bodywork types and some (in fact most) people refer to them as the Models along with the variations of, as the letter system changed every year, whilst the model stayed the same apart from colour schemes available, therefore it is slightly more accurate.

It ended with the RD07a which was from 1996 until Honda mistakenly in a lot of followers eyes stopped production in 2003.

You have a RD04 from 1991 which preceeded the 07 and 07a. and was around in the 750 version from 1990 until 1993 when the 07 was introduced.

You may also see reference to the RD03, which was an XRV650, which was built in 1989 and shared the same frame to the RD04, however it was never imported into the UK and only came into this country either as a personal or grey import.

Here endeth the lesson, hopefully it was understandable.

Thanks for that. Technically mine was registered in 1992 but was probably a 1991 build as you suggest.
The 07 in 1993 was when they lowered the seat height presumably? What happened to 05 and 06 I wonder?

    Codes

The seats still pretty high on the 07, I can assure you and I'm 6'2"

I don't know what happen to the 05 and 06 either, maybe they used those codes on another bike that shared the engine.

just looked it up - the seat was lowered by 15mm, which in old money, isn't very much at all - just over half an inch.

Might not be much to you but I have an RD03 and I'm only 5`10" tall (typing in high pitch voice).

p.s. it all started in 1988 which is when my little baby was born.

15 or 20 mm can make a significant difference for some people who are not very big...

...and that's true for bike seat-height as well

I believe the BMW adjustable GS seat also varies only over 20 mm, so it is apparently an important enough difference. My old RD03 felt definitely a lot higher than my current 07, but maybe the difference was not that big in reality. Hmm, I should get myself an RD03 again for measure, that's a good enough excuse isn't it? :P
