    XRV 650 output shaft gone

    Hello everyone!

Well for the second time inside 2 years the output shaft / drive sprocket is donald .

This time there are no splines on the shaft and no teeth on the inside of the sprocket.

Its costing me £500 a time to get the shaft replaced and I've done it once already.

    I have had enough.

So if anyone wants a rebuilt, pile of s**t XRV 650 with a shiny new shaft and sprocket let me know!

Take care on those horrible winter roads.....at least the suns shining here....

Must be very frustrating for you.

No consolation but are you using pattern front sprockets?

    hmm... sorry to hear that.

I've checked mine and it's got a bit of play, but the splines look to be in good order. What's the first signs that things are going out?

    Output shaft failure, suspicion

    Stu

I'm also curious whether you had an original Honda front sprocket, or an aftermarket one.

After purchasing a cheap (ish) sprocket kit I noticed some major differences between the genuine Honda front I have fitted, and the cheap front thats still in the box.

The Honda sprocket features a rubber cush and is flanged on both sides, whereas the budget one has no cush, and is only flanged on one side.

My suspicion is, that if this budget sprocket is fitted the wrong way round, with the flange facing the engine, it will cause the sprocket to be out of line with the rear sprocket and chain. Being too far out on the output shaft, and when transmitting power through the drivetrain, this puts a sideways force on the front sprocket trying to centre itself, and it is this action that ends up chewing the splines off the output shaft.

    Any comments, anyone????

    Regards

    Bob

    sounds kosher to me Bob.

Stu is there any wear on the chain guides that might indicate the chain running out of true?

Not checking mine just yet.............I need to work up the courage first!

    Thanks all....

I've gone down to the bike shop that is replacing the shaft and made it VERY clear I only want genuine Honda parts, as the old sprocket is definitely not genuine.

Thanks to all for your sympathies / advice and Dave S, I'm in Gran Canaria, so its not so easy.....

    Stay safe people.

    Stu'

Of course there is a bodge to overcome this, but it is a short'ish term fix that I've heard some bikes that have been round the world have had done...

New sprocket, line it up perfectly on the output shaft, then set to it with some big time welding.

Not a recommended solution, but a cheap, get you out of a corner fix.

Don't be downbeat with the AT. Deep down, it is a fantastic bike.

A knackered shaft is plain to see once you remove the sprocket. The splines on the shaft will look worn down.

As long as they grip the slots in the sprocket then it's OK. I think problems arise when a pattern sprocket doesn't exactly match the splines or there is no rubber damper.

Honda sprockets are much more expensive but you can recoup some of the cost by fitting a pattern rear.
