, after taking the bashplate off I discovered that the tabs that should be holding it to the front of the frame aren't. They've broken off and now only the crashbars are holding the front edge in palce. My thinking is that it's
probably OK like this, but I'd welcome any opinions!

Two grooves is normal, it is sacrificial. The time to change it is when the grooves are nearly as deep as the outside depth otherwise the chain will eat your swingarm. To change it should really require the removal of the swing arm, but on my old DR350 I just cut through the part that goes around the swing arm pivot, pushed it on and bolted it to the swingarm as normal and it was fine for years after.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
