    Tripmaster... again

    Hello all,

I have a little problem with my tripmaster and I need some help. It just stopped counting kilometers a few days ago. Let me tell you how it happened:
2 weeks ago I has a little "encounter" with a BMW.. I crashed into it at about 20 km/h (his fault, of course.. ). I have fixed the front wheel, so now the bike works just fine. When I started riding it again, I noticed that the analog speedo didn't work anymore, but the tripmaster kept on counting. Later on I have discovered that the speedo cable was broken. I'll buy one in the near future. The problem is that 2 days ago, the tripmaster has stopped counting. When I start the bike, the tripmaster looks OK.. It shows me the clock (which works fine), it shows me the trips (Trip1, Trip2 and -Trip), but all on zero, and that's it. It responds to all the commands, but it just doesn't count. My guess is that the tripmaster is OK, but the sensor that's supposed to sent pulses to it doesn't work anymore.

My question is: Where is that sensor located? How can I test it to see if it still works or if it's broken? Does anybody know the location if that sensor and where is it connected to the tripmaster? I have the Haynes manual, but there is nothing in it about the tripmaster.

    Thanks, DDC

Don't quote me, but I think the Tripmaster sensor is inside the speedo.

I seem to remember when I was casting my eye over the Haynes wiring diagrams a while back, because I was wondering how easy it would be to fit a tripmaster to an early bike.

I also seem to remember a procedure in the Haynes electrical section for checking the tripmaster, but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure you need the speedo drive to be working, as it is the only way for the tripmaster to know the distance travelled/revoulutions of the wheel.

    Thanks for all the answers...

I will get a new speed cable and try again... The weird thing is that the tripmaster was working even though the analog speedometer didn't... I have checked the speedometer and it works just fine (stuck another cable inside it, connected to a drilling machine and spun it... is had shown me the speed with no problem).

Anyway, I'll get the new cable and check it then.

    Thanks all, DDC

Hi ddcristi BEFORE you connect your new speedo cable MAKE sure that the DRIVE unit at the wheel is FREE MOVING as this part is prone to breaking. Clean it and apply new grease " there is a special type " that does not make the NYLON gear break up .I cannot remember which type it is but i am sure it is in one of the earlyer threads about the SPEEDO DRIVE.FW600VJ

    Hi again,

Thanks for the tip.. I have already greased the speedo drive with lithium grease. The drive in the wheel was ok.. The problem was at the cable. The water protection on the cable was broken and the cable had some water in it and it rusted. That's why it broke.

    Thanks all...

    It's me again..

I have just bought a new speedo cable and of course, I've already put it on the bike. Now, the tripmaster works fine, but the analog speedometer still doesn't... So I guess the problem is in the speedometer. I'll probably fix it next week...

I have also made that small change in the tripmaster to be able to see the actual speed (10 kohm resistance on the SPD connectors) and it works just fine.. Very useful!

    Thanks again, DDC

In hot climates, it is not unknown for the speedo needle to stick if it's been resting for a while. Try giving the speedo a thump when you're moving!
