    Stuck in gear

Had an accident on the way to work today.
Got hit by a car which did no obvious damage other than to bend the gear lever and snap the footrest bolt.
I didn't come off at all.
However the bike is stuck in second gear and no matter what I do I can't get it out of second gear.
I rode it all the way home in second, straightened the lever out again but still can't get it out of second.
    Any ideas?

    Wose case scenario?

Don't panic yet. Worst case senario is removing the r/h crankcase cover and the clutch (no big deal). The gear selector shaft may be bent and the pawl that actuates the drums may not be alighned anymore.

I had my chain break last year which resulted in a badly bent shifter shaft which I had to replace. This does not require an engine strip or splitting the case.
But in order to replace the shaft or check the alighnment on the pawl you have to remove the clutch. This requires a devise or holding tool to secure the crank whilst you remove the nut from the clutch. (90 ft lbs). The Haynes manual illustrates such a tool.

For a qwik fix try pulling the shaft hard outboard in order to engage the pawl. The shaft may be salvagable still.

Sorry to hear that Dave - I had a similar one last year. I didn't have the same gear problem, but the lever was bent right back and trapped my foot against the foot rest. The bashplate and the foot took most of the impact, which must have been a lot less severe than yours. Are you Ok? You can operate a computer without a foot....

Well as I didn't have time to look at it I've taken it down to my local garage (Morses Motorcycles) who despite cocking up a few times on the bike were as nice as ever. They also suggested the solution above and are going to look at it for me this afternoon.
They even offered me a loan bike, so well done Morses for the good service.

I'm ok which is the main thing. Its my first accident when filtering so I can't complain, and to be fair it was because he didn't look or indicate before suddenly turning right. Although perhaps I should have been more aware so it wil serve as a good reminder for some time to come of the perils of filtering!

Oh and the car was much worse off than the bike!!

    Glad you are okay.

How about insurance? On the outside, it is only a bent gear lever, but how about when your garage finds out something worse is going on in your engine...

    Update.

The gearchange shaft has sheared, the gearchange lever is also obviously mullered and the bolt holding the footpeg on has sheared off. No other damage.

The shaft can be replaced without splitting the cases or the engine coming out I'm told, though they say its a fiddly job.
It will cost me about £240 including parts, which to be honest I'm happy to pay. It's easier for them to do it as I haven't got the time to do it with the bike off the road at the moment. They've also agreed to lend me a bike in the meanwhile.
