Chain And Sprocket and Running Probs. Help Please !!!!!!!!!!

Hi there Guys and Gals ,

The time has come for a chain and sprocket replacement and was looking at all sorts of kits from Ebay from germany and all over the place, mostly D.I.D stuff but i was wondering about the chain types. Most come with an O ring in the kit but i dont the advantages of the other types of chain.

    Any advice?

Also my @ runs a bit funny when i start her. She runs fine on full choke then she dies and starts funny on no choke. She will run fine after that but sometimes feels like she has lost all her power and then stalls and i have to start her in a hurry while freewheeling. Other than that shes gorgeous!! I was told it might be a sticky choke or carb icing but im to mechanics as boxing gloves are to playing the piano!!

Thanks Guys for any help and sorry if this topic has been posted before.

    Hello there,
X-rings are less prone to wear than O-rings and therefore will keep the grease "inside" the chain for longer. O-rings are especially vulnerable for dirt: If you have a permanent oiler like the Scottoiler the chain will remain cleaner, making the difference between X and O less significant (in theory, anyway)
The Japanese still make the best X/O ring chains, DID is a good choice for example. Strangely, the (Japanese) OE chain for the AT is not that great imo, maybe Honda specially selected some B-grade ones to match up with the poor fuel pump, regulator and corroding wheels

Poor running: Could indeed be sticky choke, making the bike running too rich when warmed-up. High fuel consumption, black exhaust smoke, dirty sparkplugs and sluggish response in mid-range are other symptoms. If all that is fine though, it could easily just be the idle needs to be set a bit higher, or maybe jets are blocked. Waterdrops can also cause irregular running, try draining the float-chambers (screws at the bottom and a little drain-hose attached to it). If all that is fine too, well, then there is still the infamous fuel-pump that could be on its way out (unlikely though if the bike still runs poorly with a completely full fuel-tank).

There is loads of information on all these issues, try to run a search, sit back and make yourself a large pot of coffee
    Good luck!

If your bike is a few years old then the choke cables are a prime suspect. I've had this problem on two of the ATs I've had. Not too difficult to replace but if you're a crap mechanic then you'll probably want someone else to replace them.

I can't recall the exact price now but they're bloody expensive to buy. I got a pair of carbs with the choke cables on them off ebay for less than half the price of the new cables from a Honda dealer.

I agree that the choke has to be the prime suspect. My last @ had a similar problem which turned out to be no lube in the choke bodies. Presumably they hadn't been greased at the factory as they were completely dry. This was fixed under warranty.

The max I've had from the OE chain was just under 25k, which I didn't think was too bad. That was with minimal lubing.

IMHO I don't like Scotoilers and wouldn't have another. Trying to get the flow right in hot and cold weather was a mare and most of the oil ended up on the rear wheel/tyre. LB.

I've had three Scottoilers which all came with the bikes I bought at the time and every one was a pain in the ass and only worked intermittantly if at all.

Best oiler I've had was the 'Motrax' electric one; very simple and mega reliable, easy to fill (unlike the Scottoilers).

Choke cable is about £35, make sure you don't damage the 90 degree bends onto the carbs, these are another £30-40 EACH!

Undo the connections at each end and squirt with WD40 leave to soak and then pull the cable in and out till it frees up before spending cash on a new one.

Put the choke lever 'on' before unthreading or rethreading the plastic choke bodies on the carbs. This takes the strain off and makes the job 100 times easier.
