    12 inch

been having fun with that as well

    30mph 2nd Gear 4k rpm 3rd Gear 3k rpm
    40mph 3rd Gear 4k rpm
    50mph 3rd Gear 5k rpm 4th gear 4-4.5k rpm 5th gear 3.5k rpm
    70mph 5th Gear 5k rpm.

Well thats what I am sticking too waiting for the nylon gear thingy to turn up. Dont think it will wash the the old bill if I get busted but I am trying, the problem is I havent worked out what 80mph is, I think its around 6k rpm in 5th but could be well off.

In my experience it is the best to choose an OE cable as replacement. I have had two aftermarket ones from different sources. They were supposed to be "specially made for the AT", but none of them had the same length as the OE cable (one was a bit shorter, the other one a lot longer ) and (therefore?) did not last very long. Also make sure the cable is correctly "routed".

PS riding without speedo: As soon as the bike starts to loose its tendency to stay upright, it is probably safe to open the throttle a little bit more without immediate risk of breaking the law

If you have trouble getting a cable soon enough, why not spend a few quid on a electronic "push-bike" speedo from Cat-Eye for example? On eBay you can get a simple one for almost next-to-nothing, just make sure they are up to high-enough speeds. They are not very useful in the dark though unless you have cat-eyes yourself.

80 mph is just a tadge (a metric tadge) over 6,000 rpm with half worn tyres.

    Many thanks Yen,

I might just not bother fixing the speedo, dont know if you need a working speedo to pass the MOT I suspect not as they dont seem to ride the bike off anywhere.

Makes the bikes mileage a little off though

Speedo is not part of the MOT. However if the tester carries out a test ride, as he has a right to do if he wants to check something on road, he may well decide it's unsafe if the speedo doesn't let him know how fast he's going. However, I've only once seen a tester do a test ride, that was on my mates Transalp to confirm slightly warped front dic.
