I am trying to sort out a trail-ride for us around Wales. It will be led by Paul (no internet access) but we will have to restrict the numbers to ten as a lot of the lanes are too small and narrow to accomadate 20 or so big trailies (it's not Salisbury Plain).

Anyone interested will need decent tyres and ideally some off-road experience. Don't get me wrong, it won't be an Enduro just a quiet trail ride. The ride would probably be approx 100 miles of trail and tarmac.

cheers, Bob

Which bit of Wales are we looking at and is Paul, Paul Lear?

So we can publish this on the site as a regular meetup/rideout we'll need to know the following:

Where do you want it?
When
A meet or ride or both
Any extra details or a contact username for more information

If you know of a good venue, let everyone know..

If you're interested - let everyone know..

If there is a south Wales meeting, I will probably pop along. Just the excuse to visit the parents 8)

McVicar
31-01-06, 03:10 PM
If you're not too far West I'm sure some of us South West boys will be up for a rideout sometime. If you're not too far over the bridge we are having a run to Minehead on Sunday morning and you are welcome to come along.

DaveS

Yep I'd up for the South Wales meets as well.

I'm always happy to meet up for a (road) ride, or maybe sometime a (really easy) off-road one!?! Finding a mutually convenient date can be tricky. Maybe when the weather warms a little we can meet at Severn View Services (Aust) or Chepstow sometime and ride to Abergavenny. Some interesting, twisty roads in that area.

Carport
02-02-06, 02:30 PM
I'd be up for that :D

McVicar
02-02-06, 02:31 PM
Any time. Just copy your post to the South West section as well as the Wales section whenever you fancy it.

Yes. Did the Chepstow to Abergavenny road last Wednesday. Not on the AT though was on the company Deauville. I also was under strict instructions to run it in as it was brand new and wasn't supposed to go over 5000 revs. Might have gone a little bit over!

Wouldn't mind trying on the Africa Twin

That is a very good route. Another is from Abergavenny, up over the Keepers to my home town of Blaenavon, Then Brynmawr, and over to Crick. Then swing left, and head out to Brecon, back over the A470, Storey Arms, past the resevoirs to Merthyr, up over to Herwain (sp), over the mountain at Mountain Ash, through the valleys and eventually emerge at either bridge-end or if you want a shorter route, Pontyprydd, then on to Cardiff

Rolo
03-02-06, 03:09 PM
me toooo

Dee Duble Yuh
05-02-06, 08:51 PM
If we can agree when, why not run up to Abergavenny. Those who travelled a long way - or if it's getting late - can ride back along the faster roads. Otherwise we can go on to Blaenavon, Brynmawr etc. From Brecon people can again choose the direct route home or take the longer route to Hirwaun, over the Rhigos Mountain to Mountain Ash etc.

Hmm. Rather than fix a date now, would it be better to keep an eye on the weather forecasts over the next few weekends?

DaveS
05-02-06, 09:42 PM
Yep I'm up for that... if we make it around a 10'sih start then it should be a bit warmer... and perhaps find a burger bar or something for lunch.

MacP

Yeah come on guys...
Saturday / Sundays should be free for the next few weeks - no point watching the 6 nations now...

Sorry that was a cheap shot! I'm still floating about in Forest of Dean and if I'm about I'll get the teas for that last remark! :D

Lets help them out.

What about the 19th February 2006.

10:00hrs at some suitable venue along the WYE VALLEY LINK ROAD in CHEPSTOW just off the M48 after the old Severn Crossing.

Then one you of local chaps (or chappesses) can devise use a nice little route OR we could just make it up as we go along!

How about,

Chepstow - Tintern - Monmouth - Skenfrith - Abergavenny is 37 miles.

I guess the weather then comes into play, if it's crap head south back to M4 and home, or if it's tidy weather continue on to Brecon - Merthyr -Ystrad -Crumlin - Pontypool - Usk - Caerleon - M4 at Newport. 115 miles

Calling Romeo One, Calling Romeo One. As Boxer Dog was our guide from good old Blighty where exactly is this layby on the way to Chepstow.

Carport
17-02-06, 05:24 PM
I guess the layby in question is the first one you come to on the A466(wye valley link road)

Take the first exit for Chepstow just as you come off the Severn Bridge(the old one) and follow signs for Chepstow. You should then be on the A466(long straight bit of dual carriageway). Cruise the layby's until you find something to take your fancy.

Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou?

Fella's,
Sorry to have to leave you all at the Newport Jct, but the ol' AT was not well. Fine on slow speeds, but definately on its last legs when I opened the throttle.

I managed to get back across the bridge, at all of 50mph... (there were ramblers moving faster than me!) ...

When I made it back to England and gave it a handful, it seemed to clear and plenty of welly seemed to improve things... Which made me think that maybe there was some crap in the carb. that I had blasted out :P .

but oh no, it didn't last long before it started playing up again.

Anyway, back home, tank off, fuel pump off and striped, and guess what... knackered contacts... just like soooo many other AT's!

So I'm in the market for one of Dave's replacements...!!

Shame I never managed to complete the run, but good to meet a few of you, and I hope you all had a good day... (don't rub it in tho').
It was probably a good job I turned back when I did because I expect I would have stopped completely when the fuel level dropped below carb height.
Ho hum.

Hopefully see ya'll again sometime.

Regards,
Paul.

So how about agreeing a date for the next ride? Maybe next time we'll explore some of those back roads Chepstow-Monmouth-Abergavenny-Brecon that I mentioned before?

Are there any dates in March you CAN'T make? Not 19 March for me. Any shift workers who can rule out certain dates? Saturdays or Sundays?

Noswaith dda chaps and chapesses,

Is everyone still OK for Sunday? It's all gone a bit quiet

I've been looking over the thread to see who wants to go where, soooo....

how about Chepstow to Abergavenny via Tintern, Monmouth & Skenfrith.

Then onto Llanfoist, Blaenavon, Brynmawr and over the top heading for Talybont. Do lunch either at 'The Star' (if the weathers crap) or head for a Burger van on the A40.

Then those who want to, can head back to M4 along the A40 via Abergavenny and those who don't can go other way to Brecon(maybe onto Sennybridge) and then head south along A470 to M4 and home.

In the abscence of any volunteers I don't mind leading but anyone who wants to do something a bit or even totally different just shout.

Quite happy to sit at the back me 8)

Sorry I couldnt be with you on this if it did happen, have had a rather ****ty 2 weeks of family problems to deal with .... members of both the wife's and my family all decided to die within 24 hours of each other, so the last 2 weeks have been taken up with funerals and the like.

But .. Everything is back to normal now, the snow was restricted to North Wales, and the Temp looks like getting warmer and wetter in the next comming weeks, so count me in.

Weather forecasts for Sunday vary.

The Met Office says cloudy but dry. High 11°C
http://www.meto.gov.uk/weather/europe/uk/wales.html

AccuWeather says Some sun, a shower; breezy. High 11°C
http://ukie.accuweather.com/adcbin/ukie/ukie_forecast_1to5day.asp?postalcode=NP7%200

BBC web site indicates it will be rainy. High 10°C
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/wales/index.shtml#no_url
But the TV forecast showed snow on Sunday morning!

But ITV reckons on heavy rain! High 10°C
http://www.itv.com/page.asp?partid=49&Day=0&LocationID=4130&RegionID=11

Take your pick! I suggest we just monitor the situation for now and check back Saturday afternoon/eve.

Plenty of water, lots of sugar and ibuprofen.

Hangovers are because you are dehydrated and alcohol lowers your blood sugar which all helps to make you sick with a pig of a headache. make sure you eat even if you don't feel like. and drink plenty (not beer though)

From Chepstow to Abergavenny as it was but then left onto the A40 to Brecon and through Trecastle then up over the Sennybridge ranges to Tirabad down to Llanwylltid Wells north to abergwesyn, North around Llyn Briane dam which is absolutely gorgeous cup of tea in Llandovery back along the A40 where you can either do Brecon, Merthyr Chepstow or Brecon Abergavenny Chepstow. It is a ride I have done in the past and goes through some fantastic biking roads. There are gravel and dirt tracks around Llynn Briane around the forest roads that we can play on too.

Like I say only a suggestions.

Of course! You'd be welcome if you were on a Harley!!! (But only just!) Dommie's are part of the club too, aren't they? ;-)

Please sign up under the Calendar. (That goes for everyone else too. It's easier to track who's planning to attend.)

Hello. Room for a Londoner? I'll be about as I'm selling my house in the Forest and will down that weekend so would look to join you for the morning.

Are people meeting in the layby on the link road from the M48 to Chepstow town? if so towards Chepstow or away? I could read back but 14 pages of posts is putting me off... :D

We are a freindly lot you know. I think we are meeting where we were going to at the last ride which is

"Coming from Cardiff take first left for Chepstow at Junction 2 of the M48(just before crossing the old severn bridge) onto the wye valley link road(A466) Look out for lots of AT's in the first of the laybys."

If I am wrong can someone let me know or I will be waiting for you lot for a long time

I know where that is...

See you all there I might see if I can convince a proper forester to bring his varadero - though they don't like coming out in the daylight to often but he can always wear a dark visor!

In the "Calendar" there are directions and links to maps of the precise meeting point. (Click on the Globe symbol alongside "latitude" and "longitude".) See you there!

As I've already said, it would be useful if everybody who's planning to join us would sign up in the Calendar. Looks like a goodly number are planning to join us. :thumbright: Hope the weather will be good OK :glasses7:

Not sure I understoodf that last post, Dai. Is BobOneLeg's post somewhere poeple can sign up to?

Like Dai, I'll be a bit busy for the rest of this month. Hopefully I'll persuade a mate who's about to take delivery of a brand-new Transalp to join us in May.

Does anyone fancy the A483 Llandrindod Wells to Newtown Powys, maybe on to Aberystwyth etc? Lots of 60 mph sweeping corners so practice your countersteering! ;)

As usual, selectng a date might be difficult. I'm busy on 6 - 7 May, and hoping to do the Dartmoor trip on 12 - 14 May. This leaves only 20 - 21 and 27 - 28. If those aren't convenient, don't worry; I'm sure you'll get by without me!! :)

Looking at my diary May is not going to be a good month for me. Away first weekend, working 3rd weekend and teaching on the last weekend. This means the 2nd weekend I need to spend with my daughter or she will think she is an orphan.

If you go have fun and I will come along to the next one. How about in June doing the forestry that Dave took piccies of on his Varadero ???

Hi Guys,

I noticed one of the other posts about first aid courses If there is enough interest I can run a bike specific first aid course for the members that are down this end of the world sometime in the summer holidays. I would need someone to find a venue. Obviously it wouldnt be certified or recognised but I do have lots of experience in teaching, I teach mountain rescue first aid and have done for many years and my last job was purly teaching. Dont want to nick Boxer Dogs business though so will only do it for the peeps in south wales area and I wont charge for it (but you will have to buy me lunch.)

Let me know what you think
