OK, A ride around Ireland before Mrs Phoenix (Sharon) drops their first child and he's (Paul) not allowed out to play anymore!

We'll head out on Friday afternoon of the 30th June and come back on Monday evening of the 3rd July. Just bring the tents or stay in B&Bs, but with no particular route planned except probably a stop a ChrisXHS's house in Tralee for a party! oh and a run round the ring of Kerry! Everyone's welcome for as long as they can join us.

Think the plan is to meet up somewhere near Galway on Friday 30th and then maybe head down Clare/Kerry. There's some fab roads and four spectacular mountain passes on the Dingle/Iveragh/Beara penninsulas. That's about all I know.... Ireland's only Beach Bar is in Caherdaniel (not sure how legit the claim is, but it's a decent bar...)

That's a shame I think we'll just miss you. We're coming over on Sat July 1st and are staying at Lough Ennell, Westmeath. Wont get over to Galway until Sunday and unfortunately the beach bar is 200 miles away from us. I'll see if I can find one on the West coast. Rode around the Ring of Kerry Summer 2004 on a glorious Summers day. We came over three years running and that was the only dry day we ever had. Still can't keep away though. Heres hoping for better weather this time.

Give me a shout if you get down this way.... the Ring of Kerry is ****e compared with the roads in the middle of the penninsula. I'd be happy to give a guided tour!
Here's a pic of the Gap of Dunloe, just outside Killarney

Hi guys,

This does sound good alright. Simon had mailed me a week or two ago about this and I didn't think I could make it as I'm going to the Skerries races north of Dublin on the Saturday, but I'd sure be interested in bombing back down to Tralee that night for some scoops and maybe a spin on the sunday ?

I'm in Tuam, 20 miles north of Galway city and wld be there on the Friday night so there'd be free, if somewhat humble, lodgings there for anyone who wants it too.

Bon voyage !
Paddy.

OK, after talking to Simon I'll meet with him at Texaco Lucan (N4, 1.5 miles west from M50/N4 roundabout) around 5 pm on Friday. Paddy will follow us later on and will probably arrive directly to Roundwood. No word from Chris yet.

hi folks,

I was talking to paddy a couple of weekends ago in cork and he mentioned this trip. I ride a transalp (about 6 months now) and i was wondering if you guys would be ok with me tagging along on saturday.

I'm not a novice biker . . the transalp is my 4th bike, but i would be a novice to off road - unless you count the usual chippings down country roads and a venture beside a canal for a few miles :) .. so i want to make sure it's ok for me to turn up.

cheers,
Dave.

Greetings chaps, well I'm stuck working late on Friday trying to finish a school which has to reopen soon, so it'll be the Sat morning for me and I believe Dave is meeting me on the way.

Most importantly, what time would yee be wanting to head out on the roads at, coz I'm thinking it'd be ten/eleven before we get there ?

Cool so. I have a slight change of plans anyway regarding tonight. I won't be able to leave work until 5:30 so won't be at said Texaco until 6. Depending on Simon's plans I might not go there at all. Waiting for a word from Simon at the moment.

If anybody else wants to join the trip and was going to meet us in Texaco Lucan, please message in this thread before 5pm so that I know to meet you there!

hey folks,

how did your weekend trip go?

Unfortunately by the time i met Paddy in Nass on saturday morning the rain had got the better of me and my wet gear. I don't mind damp, but my nether region was like two sponges in a rock pool. Deciding discretion was the better part of valour i returned home. . and looking out at the rain all afternoon i wasn't too disapointed that i gave up so easily. i could only make it for the saturday anyway so it was probably for the best.

hope to make it next time.

D.

Simon
04-12-06, 08:46 AM
for anyone who interested, Phoenix, Samih and myself and maybe ChrisH and ShaneH are planning a ride on Saturday and an overnight in a B&B then home on the sunday. I was thinking Donegal direction but nothing planned as such. Anyone is welcome. This will be very much weather dependant cause i just couldn't be arsed if the weather is going to be crap!

Oh and i'm talking this saturday coming the 9th december and sunday the 10th.

:D Yeah I'm all for it,

17-01-07, 12:15 PM
Excellent, Sunday morning suits me perfectly, my current tyres won't cope with much off roading (Michelin Anakees), so I'm happy to stay on the tarmac, or what passes for tarmac around here
I was thinking of either following the Lee down as far as Ballingeary, nipping over the mountains before Macroom or heading even further west towards Kerry, over the Conor pass and home via Kenmare. It's a given that there'll be plenty of cold. wet and muck, perfect for the Transalp :D

I was thinking of meeting somewhere near Ballincollig at 10:30 on Sunday morning, as FatFergie seems to be the only one interested at the moment, let me know if this suits you, we may also be meeting ChrisH if we're headed in the Kerry direction.

yep sounds like an excuse to get the old man to finally go to nw200... dunno if my liscence is valid in north ireland... :(

Simon
06-02-07, 03:08 PM
can't see it being a problem shane. and sure if the police try to get you just head for the fields and see if they can keep up to the border, then they can't get you.

Sure you could always ride up to the campsite on your bike as its only just inside the north and then you can jump on the back of my bike up to the nw200 if needs be.

RainMan
06-02-07, 03:46 PM
you won't have any problem Shane, used to go over and back across the border for years on my provisional license. Count me in on the trip to the NW200, great roads up there and always a great weekend in Portrush.
The Veradero looked good last Sunday, pity we didn't make it to the Healy pass, but something to look forward to next time, was a good call to give it a miss as it was getting late, rolled into Cork City just as it was getting dark

ChrisH
08-02-07, 07:47 PM

Rainman - maybe we should meet up half way, perhaps Glengarriff??

RainMan
09-02-07, 09:11 AM
Sounds like a plan, being the soft git that I am, I have a preference for hotel/B&B to camping, but from experience Portrush tends to get booked up fairly quickly, so if we're not planning to sleep under the canvas, it might be an idea to consider booking fairly soon.

Simon
09-02-07, 10:39 AM
i think you guy might be missing something. The weekend of the NW200 is the irish national meet and we are planning on camping in fermanagh. If people want on the saturday to head up and see the races then we can do that.

As for directions i can give you the website and the GPS cords and you will have to do the rest yourself i think.

Great stuff, had just come online to see what was happening.

I've been afraid I wouldn't be able to make it but after a six week wait I've finally received my tyres so I'm off in a few minutes to try and get them fitted.

I've spent the morning trying to get the rear off - I managed to break the bead and pull the tyre over the rim on one side, but I'll be damned if I could break it on the other, gah.

Brilliant.... I reckon me and Shane should be up for that one!!! When are you planning it????

it will be when suits most people i think cause a few missed out the other week like Paul and Phil really. Also has to suit Kathryn's work. She is planning on coming in the car with her best friend so they can look after themselves the whole time but they are looking forward to seeing you all again. They will need a B&B or hotel near to your house i guess.

Is there any dates during july/august that suit you best?

ChrisH

Only trouble with July/August is there are loads of touristas around... late June would be better for stuff like B & Bs although as long as I get enough notice should be able to organise something...

ok, i understand, my reason for later is this extension we will be getting done. I'll see once we get the planning permission, which should be next week, when the builder is going to start and then work from that.

Be better if i could just get her to stay in a tent then no problem!:D

yep thats the one. What i'm going to do it leave straight after work on the thrusday, so sometime between 5 and 6, and then head straight there. If it seems like i won't make it this side of midnight then i might just find a field and pitch up until about 6 and then make the rest of the journey first thing, leaving me most of friday and all day saturday to have fun, then an easy ride home on the sunday.

If this suits anyone then we can meet up on route.

If the forecast is for similar rain than yesterday B&B might be a viable option... On the way home I saw this gray wall of rain approaching and withing seconds the road was flooding with several inches of water. I really felt like somebody threw a bucket of water on me.

When I got home I heard over the phone that a shopping centre roof had partially collapsed when that "shower" had hit it. Pretty cool in a dangerous sort of way. And no, my biking gear is definitely not waterproof.

14-06-07, 09:56 AM
Well, I can now say happily that Im all ready to go, go my pannier racks on, dusted down the tanks bag and panniers got ready to, now what have I forgotten oh yes rear wheel bearings as my last ones exploded yesterday with an all mighty crunch. But never fear I'll be there.
Im planning to leave Nards about 1-1.30pm friday and head south (obviously;) )
bikerjo01 has expressed an interest to join us. So the travelling options for us northerners is (a) head to enniskillen and go down the west coast very pretty or (b) head to Dublin lots of traffic and motorways and possibly meet the dubs and go cross country from there.
If anyone has any thoughts let me know.

Here's what I had in mind for the weekend.... vaguely.
Friday: am. hopefully Simon and me (and anyone else..) will go fishing and catch a boat load of mackerel. Most people sound like they'll be arriving Friday night.... so fresh mackerel for dinner!
Saturday: have a ride around some of the beautifull roads of Kerry and Cork, incl., Kenmare, Healy Pass, Glengariff, Priest's Leap, Kilgarvan, Ballagh Beama, Ballaghisheen, Waterville depending on weather etc. Barbeque, bonfire and music hopefully!
Sunday: Most will be heading home....

....something like that!

Join us for the fishing expedition!!! Was out today with Shane and Niall and there were three or four dolphins playing round the boat - they were about 10 - 15 metres away doing a synchronised swimming routine! Pretty cool, but a bit scary as they're so big! Tried to get a pic with my phone but by the time I'd worked out how to do it, they'd gone back to Dingle or wherever!! Nice one ! I had a bit of a swimming expedition myself today on the way to the Galway airshow after I made the mistake of wearing BMW Savannah trousers as was I carrying a mate to avoid the traffic. I think they held up for about all of ten seconds before they were completely saturated in rain that was bouncing two feet off the road, rubbish. At least as a result I didn't go down near my usual spot where several people were clobbered by a door falling off a chopper, eeek.

Will be selling a 2002 or a 2003 Transalp 650 - both black , both UK imports - in the next week or so. 2003 model Black, 17250 miles, GIVI plate & top box , heated grips, K&N air filter, iridium sparkplugs, imported 2 years ago by me - looking for about five and a half grand (euro). 2002 model Black, 23000 miles, will be imported this weekend (VRT will be 300 euro, will hold off if you want to register it yourself) .about a grand less. Haven't yet decided which I'll keep, but one has to go , so if you know anyone looking let me know. I can probably deliver if you'll stump up for return train ticket ( 6ft 1 , don't do buses !) And another thing!

Watch out for speed cameras on your way to Stafford!
North Wales isn't too bad, but I was done for 38 mph in a 30 limit near Llangollen. And it was on my 48th birthday, spoiled a totally clean licensehttp://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif
Staffordshire is covered in Gatsos on A-road speed limits, a real piss-off as some of the roads are brilliant.

RainMan
10-10-07, 09:01 PM
Sure Dave, you'd be very welcome, our normal route for this trip is across north Wales via the A55, at the end of the A55 we would normally stay on the northern motorway route past Runcorn on the M56 and then straight down the M6 to Stafford, but we could easily hook off in the Chester direction and take the A roads down rather than the motorway, which I imagine would be closer to you, it would be great to meet up with some of the UK lads.:p

And another thing!

Watch out for speed cameras on your way to Stafford!
Staffordshire is covered in Gatsos on A-road speed limits, a real piss-off as some of the roads are brilliant.

Aye, used to live just off the A41 in Watford, had the dubious distinction of living on the most densly speed camera populated road in Britain, 5 camera in 1.5 miles, was famous for people losing their license before they got to the end of it, remember when Quentin Wilson turned up with a BBC crew to do a Top Gear special on it. Only advantage that we have is that we can't get our licenses pointed if nabbed in the UK, but this is to change in January

I'm in Winsford, only about 7 miles from Junction 18 on the M6. Please keep in contact!

I've only been on my bike 3 times since April cos I've been poorly sick. Went to Honda Chester today to buy a new top box, came home a lot faster than I went (trucks, tractors, coffin dodgers doing 30mph max) and am still grinning.
Cheers,

Hi Rainman,
What time does your ferry get in to Holyhead?
I could meet up with you guys at Knutsford or Sandbach services on the M6, usually about 2 hours from Holyhead unless travelling at naughty speeds.
I haven't used either of the services for years so I can't comment on their standards at present.

The northbound Stafford services is new and smart (Marks & Sparks food shop) but not much use for meeting up southbound!

Been back to Chester Honda today, the new top box is fine but the mounting plate on my '97 bike is not compatible with it, so a new one ordered...
Cheers,
Dave

Oh you guys are making me jealous now! About 9 years ago Mrs S and I had a tour of the Dingle and the Ring of Kerry, plus some diversions, on the @. In October so it was quiet, but it was also a bit wet & windy! Stayed in Castle Gregory, Valentia Island, and Kenmare.
Excellent B&B's everywhere, and particularly good bars in Kenmare.

Don't worry the old goat doesn't bite, and the animal that they carry down the main street is fairly harmless as well :D. But you'd obviously be extremely welcome if you came next year, hopefully the summer will be a bit better than the last one.:toothy2:

Lived here 20 years and never made it... in the old days before the celtic feline it used to be a serious piss-up and fighting weekend, frequented particularly by the non-settled community.... think it's just tourist stuff now. Anyway there's much madder places than Killorglin
As for a ride -out on Sunday, this is what Met Eireann (can't do the fadtha) have to say about it "The rain will clear to frequent showers for Sunday and winds veering westerly are likely to increase to gale force again in many places. It will feel cold and there will be a risk of hail and thunderstorms once more." Brrrrr...

I think it is, I've got the four coil/twin ICU model but the units are on their sides. Nevertheless I've gone through everything and I think it must be. Started up fine this morning but then went bad again, seems intermitent. :(

ChrisH
02-12-07, 08:00 PM
****e.... thought yours was the later model. The guy who had my first TA before me had this prob. I found out loads of stuff for him, but that was years ago... he bought a new CDi from Germany then I bought the TA off him.... Basically the units crack across the PCB just behind the connector, so if you can scrape away gently you may find a hairline crack in one of the strips which it's possible to mend with solder, then reseal with silicon sealer or something I imagine. BTW I have two coils for the early models if they're any use to you...

Hello, just realised I haven't been online for nearly 5 months when got a woke up mail from DaveS. Yeah, we have plenty of sleeping capacity in our semi-d mansion, new porch and all, you're all welcome. Garden is a bit soggy this time of the year, but that shouldn't dampen enthusiasm of any would be campers.

Had a bit of a bump with white van man couple of months ago. No injuries, but strom needed new forks. I think the van needed a new door, so got away lightly. I was travelling alongside him (admittedly on the bicycle lane) when van guy suddenly changed lane without indicating or looking. Bar end and crashbar took the impact saving knee with bruising only, and shoulder with just a soft bump. Was bit a shaken afterwards.

I have no plans for 28th-> so definitely on for a decent spin.

Scotland. What do you think? Have spoken to a few members and they are keen on this one. As the English members don't care what we do we will sort ourselves out! I want one last trip in before my first child arrives in July so want to go and see scotland on the bike. The rough plan would be to head over on a thursday night and then head around scotland for the next few days, getting the ferry home again on the Sunday night. That way most people only need to take one day off work. Chish from kerry is coming so anyone down that way can sort out to meet up with him on the way up i guess. It will be around the end of april i think and camping unless the weather turn nasty.:thumbleft:

Anyway, I am coming over on 1 April, arriving at Rosslare about 6pm and aiming to head into Dublin for the evening, if anyone is around?
The next morning, I aim to head up to Dogheda, stopping there briefly to see someone, then to Belfast, where I hope to drop my stuff at my hotel and then head out and meet Simon to be shown some of Northern Ireland before my conference duties start in earnest that evening.
On Sunday I will spend the afternoon pootling about until I get somewhere to stay near the ferry that evening, as I return on the 9am ferry on Monday morning.

My plan is to arrive about 6pm I think the ferry arrives, and ride up to Dublin. I will sort myself a hotel for the evening, but on the Wednesday, I will ride to Drogheda and then onto Belfast. If you are about for any of that, let's meet.
