(im based near wigan). So there is only 5 of us in the north west then. beter than none, ok lets get this meet sorted.
Well unless my geography is totally out, adventurer is practically in the middle, so depending how far above Preston Austin is?, some where around Wigan, Ormskirk is prob good place to meet, from there who knows!, like i said all i've eva done is commute along M60 from Stockport to Trafford Park.

Anybody come up with an idea for a meet yet? And is the invitation open to anyone or are you all mates?
Do any of you ever get up to Rivington Barns? There are a couple of ATs turn up now and again
Anywhere north of Preston has got to be the place as there are loads of fantastic roads up there.
Never met anybody yet! new to biking, so can't suggest meet points cos don't know any, just wanna get out there and enjoy. :bounce:

Looks like theres at least half a dozen of us,
you're right there are some great roads north of Preston, Rivington is good on a Sunday as is Devils Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale, sometimes upwards of 500 bikes. The roads east towards Yorkshire are pretty special and you can do some serious mileage in a day.
Just need someone to make a plan see if we can all make it.

Lets all meet up one sunday (will have to decide where). Then go for a ride. i know lots of great routes. :)
Well add me to you list
I am based in Manchester, so if we could organise a regular meet would be great. Especially since the glories of Spring and Summer are not too far away!
Not sure on everybody else's thought, but maybe arrange for a Sunday in the month at a different venue each time? At least that way everybody isn't inconvenienced too much, plus we get to try different roads!

Right chaps & ladies.. We now have a Calendar (http://www.xrv.org.uk/event_manager/events.php) for you to put your meetup/rideout dates into or any other event you'd like to put in there (including Birthdays :-)).. It's there for you guys to advertise and organise your trips/meetups/rideouts so go ahead, don't be shy and use it..

sounds like a plan to me - count me in.
maybe meeting at warrington services on the 62, or perhaps carnock richard services or thereabouts?
Tend to go out with the bike club www.wdmc.co.uk on sundays but happy to either give that a miss, or meet on a saturday some time?
ooooh....... seem to have missed all this for a while.
I don't care where we meet as long as its got grub and tea and I don't have to arrange it, but suppose all someone needs to do is pick a date and location and post it here and on the diary calendar thing.
I live in Garstang but travel to Warrington and back daily, so mileage weather etc not a prob. It's just fitting it all in at the weekend. If I say i am coming i will definitely be there if I say I am not, I might still turn up - depends if I can fit it in {wife/kids/dog/DIy/other domestics/work permitting}.

Hi Tornado, the camping trip I mentioned is the HU northern mini meet at the Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge (N.Yorks Moors).
Have a look on the calendar and in some of the posts, Chris has put a link somewhere!
Would like to make it, lots going on at the moment so not sure....
Hopefully I'll either ride up for a couple of hours on Sat eve or maybe camp and head home in good time Sun am.

I go to the Hen & Chicken every week, then onto the Scotch Piper.
Normally, Im with my uncle on a blue Varadero or my mate on a yellow FZR400
I'll be there again this week :D
By any chance, is your bike black?
shel750
06-10-06, 10:33 AM
Hi AT Kid, yes, of course it's black. What other colours do they come in?
I've not been to the Hen & Chickens for a couple of weeks due to all the police hanging about. I go to Knott End & Glasson dock. Plus, the roads are great up there. As soon as the clocks alter and bugger the day up, I think the cafe up at Knott End closes early so I'll probably be back at the Hen & Chicken soon.
TA! Shel
I should be up at Rivi Barn next weekend probably sun 23rd
Anyone else going?

Hi, I am in Garstang. Keep an eye out either here, or more usually a new thread in this forum for meet-ups, just needs soemone to plan a day and a place. I don't think we have managed a proper North West meet yet - I have been to one in Scotland and 2 on the Yorkshire side so far.
I might get round to posting a meet at that Cafe on Horseshoe pass to tempt our welsh and liverpool bretheren - there is also a bit of space there to play off road as well.

Hello Peeps
I'm a new member and live near Runcorn, Cheshire and looking forward to the camp in the Lakes in September
Would be interested in a N/West meet but cannot do any of August. New to Transalp (bought in Dec 04), don't get chance to use it much but have been to Transylvania and back and to the Sahara and back with Nick Sanders
Honda panniers and top box, tall screen, heated grips, tank cover, scottoiler and sand - I'm still trying to get it clean after the Sahara !
Catch you all soon

Hi Paul
I live near to you in Anderton, Northwich. Like you, I am new to this site. I have an African Twin and have completed a few 'epic' rides myself. In 1995 I rode from Northwich to Bombay, in 2001 I drove to The Gambia across the Sahara and last year I rode an XT 600 to Timbuktu. My dream is to ride the 'Twin' to Cape Town, maybe next year. Anyway, if you fancy a ride out sometime, let us know.
Cheers
Mike

Hi All, it would be good to meet up with some more like minded peeps....
The only person i know on here is Shel750
I prefer meets.
Work shifts so some Sundays are ok for me or days during the week.
I live between Chorley/Preston and quite often go to the St.Annes meet on a Monday night (Idea: why dont we use that as a meet? It is already established and there is food and drink there till late. Just park all the Ta's and At's etc at one end) Worth a try. Anyone else go?
If you're not familiar with where it is etc heres a link http://www.fylde-coast-motorcycle-meet.co.uk/
Cheers!

Guys,
Once again thanks for a fantastic weekend, thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and have now come away suitably inspired to keep my AT and start carry out the tweaks and mods.....dismissed the GS1200 idea now.
............def count me in on a northwest rideout and meets, more offroad would be cool:rr:

Hi Paul,
i'm stuck on a oil rig at the moment and not allowed to bring "mobli" with me......something about might blow everybody up when taking calls when sat in a huge big oil and gas vessel
I'm back saturday afternoon, so I'll call you then to see if your up for ith............weathers gonna have to be really rotten to stop me from playing out on sunday.
Hi Pete
I've consulted with the powers that be and I can play out on Sunday
When you said mild off road - would that be on a par with what we did in the Lakes? or would it be easier or more difficult
I'll be out Saturday afternoon but will be back in the evening, you have my home number - speak to you then
Fewtrees - are you up for this?

Dohhhh!!! only just read this thread.!! already posted new one. Anyway here it is.
This Sunday Nov 4.
Planning a ride out, mostly on road with some easy off road bits; Taking in Salter fell roman road north out of Slaidburn, Devils bridge, single track twisties though Dent to Hawes, maybe Stalling busk (byeway) to Malham and Settle. Route's flexible.
Meet up near Preston M6 ? 09.30/10.00 depending on taker's
Anybody interested?
I'll be riding Transalp or Africa so nothing silly off road.
Can be all on road if thats preferred.
I know its short notice but I dont do long forward planning.
Hey knobby101, was it you I rode back from the national meet with? ( accross to Hawes and down to M6 Preston)

As I remember its a fairly easy track on an XR250. An SLR on road tyres is a different proposition....... Should make it quite interesting.
At the Ingleton road end there is a river ford, so depends on rainfall.
Here is my advice if you intend to try some of these trails,... DO NOT ride alone.!!
We will be checking out some of these trails on the TA and @ next time out so will keep you informed.

I work 2 friday nights out of three and one of them is until 8am so most saturdays are buggered for me.
Point taken about riding alone, although I will still end up doing it on the easier stuff.
It looks like I will need some spare wheels with offroad tyres soon, or maybe just change tyres, as the current set are well past their best.

Hiya people,
I just joined your excellent forum here recently, it looks like a great site.
I just bought an XR400 and fancy doing a few runs and a bit of off roading.
I live in New Mills (HighPeak/Derbyshire/Cheshire border)
Do you guys meet regularly? can you recommend where best to use the XR around the New Mills area? (without being nicked or stoned by farmers/ramblers/horsie types)
Cheers

I dont really want to go far South of Lancaster, North of Penrith or East of Ingleton cause it would take most of the day to get there and back, but there is plenty to do around there, or in the Lakes.

Anyone from the North West (or anywhere else for that matter) fancy a ride up. Route up something interesting like A6 via Shap, Hartside Pass, Alston, Hexham, Bellingham, Kielder Forest and the Kielder forest drive (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/website/ourwoods.nsf/LUWebDocsByKey/EnglandNorthumberlandKielderKielderKielderCastleFo restParkCentreKielderForestDrive) (£3), jedburgh then Kelso. I suppose the obvious choices would be either Matlock or Buxton (might be easier for the "northerners" among you) either is easily achievable for me in little over an hour
I guess it depends on where the majority is coming from ???
But if Buxton is a good starter how about The Cat and Fiddle ???

I know the area OK as I used to live in Stoke and go around that area a bit and used to Mountain bike over it, however I have not been on a ride out on my TA with an experienced gang like you guys so I guess it depends on what the criteria is and what we all want.
I have my OS explorer map out at the moment and there are some great back lanes, I cant find any off road stuff and I dont know of any.
Can you give me any pointers?
I might be winning the battle NOT to go to Londaon on the 2nd so I may be up for both dates aswell

Same boat as Frad, know the area reasonably well from cycling there for many year.
Was out that way on Sunday with two work mates (one on an brand new SP2 and one a big BMW) they complained abount needing knobbly tyres and we didn't even see any mud, just roads that don't start with an A......
Can I suggest 'The Spud Riley' bike ride route (didn't do it this year) as good start, see
http://www.polkadotchallenge.co.uk/images/SpudRiley-map-lrg.jpg
It does the Cat and Fiddle on the way back.
Ignore the start in Woodford and pickup the part south of Buxton. There a ford crossing at Tissington just before the A515, a good mix of open lanes, hills, the odd A road, some cafe stop potential.
I'm planning to be out that way again this Sunday with the IAM group, so may pickup some more variations to this
I could make into a Zumo compatible file if its any use.
Looks like a starter for 10 to me, not sure about dropping into Poynton/ Woodford bit, But the rest looks good.
Edale and round there is nice too. Would mean a loop further North what does everyone think ?
How many miles/hours are we looking at doing ??
:thumbright:
Sorry just read your message again and you hve already suggested skipping that bit out :banghead:
It's late I've had a long day
Think the map is great as everyone can print one off and have it with them.
I have found a byeway that runs through Buxton golf course.........That could be fun !!!!
Anyway we got a start lets see how your weekend trip goes and see if we have any additions / ommisions.

The Spud Riley route as whole is 100 miles, 6 1/2 hours on a push bike
Lopping off the start as shown on the map and going from the top of the Cat, I guess it would be about 75 miles.
Matlock is the big bike town in the area - good for a stop.
I've done a few ride-outs with work and ended up leading the whole way as noboby knows the route detail - its quite a undertaking for novice rider of 12 months - better to share it out if possible. Can that work???????

How about this - loosely based on the bike ride route suggested.
Start at Cat and Fiddle, anticlockwise down to Ilam Hall, Tissington (ford or small foot bridge), Matlock (food), llop around Bakewell (too many cameras on A6), then loop out to A623 (another good cafe) and back towards Buxton, cross A515 then up past High Edge Raceway and back to C&F.
Mapsource says 80 miles and 2.5 hours
Looks good to me Campagman, is this the route you are going to do this weekend ?

But also this Sunday is the National Hill Climb (Bicycles) in Matlock - so I may go there to watch.
