View Full Version : Salisbury Plain - Sunday March 19th
Well lets stick a date in the books......
Usual place......
Post here if there any beginners so that we can look out for you on the day.
Can we also have some photographers there as well please.
Would be nice to take our time and get some actions shots rather than just enjoying ourselves!! Mr Woolley, you free?
Perhaps take some video's to?
I'm up for this Dave...
I will definately need looking out for though - I'm booked for the Yamaha school on 24th so this will be prep for that!

Only if you fall off.
Hurrah, I was just thinking that Spring was getting close and the wild open spaces were calling  Or something.
I AM going to make it this time. I AM!!
There's a guy in Surrey asking about the Plain over on ADVRider, would anyone mind if I invited him along? He's on a 950ADV, but I felt that the more the merrier! Any comments?
Cheers

The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.
Man Up North - What else do you want to know?
It's not hard core off-road riding. There are some harder sections as I'm sure Chad will tell you, but overall its ok.
I would recommend crash bars as much for your peace of mind as anything else. However you just need to stop yourself doing things that you think you might not be able to cope with. So if we pile in to some muddy bit then just wait for us to come out the other side, we won't leave you there.
Also those that are new to riding off-road try practising standing up on your bike and controlling it whilst moving slowly. This lowers your center of gravity and makes it much easier to cope with rough or muddy ground. IMHO anyway.
I'm sure those that are going on the off-road training will be able to give us some real tips.....

Many thanks for the advise. 1 question, Do you take any thing with you, i.e. food ,water proofs etc.etc. I'll proberly come along anyway just to see wot its like. give me a chance to me some of you before HU July..But thanks again............... any one got any s/h crash bars going cheap (not chrome) :)
I think its important to be warm and dry so yes waterproofs are a good idea.
You will get muddy so be prepared for that as well.
We do tend to bring snacks with us and stop at regular intervals for a break, so yes food and fluids is a good idea.
A spare pair of gloves and socks can be a good idea as well to change in to for the journey home if they are wet.

I'll also try and get along to the Hook meet up next Sunday to say hello if that's ok.

Will have to go steady as I have no crash bars yet and trying to find rd03 panels can leave you a bit
Looking forward to it though.
Sadly I'm not going to be able to make this, unless picking up the keys to my new house slips.

I enjoy fun and offroading but no fecking way's doing 100 odd miles to Salisbury Plains in the wet to get more wet and then drive back wet and cold if ya get the idea

If I'm about that weekend I'll probably swing by on the XR for a bit of a play.
Really should get the TA out at some point soon, but I don't think its wise for my first ride on a new (to me) bike to be an off road mudfest!
mav make sure youve got your camera cos with this weather we've been having methinks its going to be a tad mucky
Yep I'm really looking forward to this...... I might even clean my bike to get it ready.
Hi, been looking at the site for some time so decided to join. I live near Bath, Africa Twin owner (Recent). I had a yamaha Super Tenera when they came out years ago but mostly sports bikes, had a long break but back now. Went for the Twin because it seemed fun without being fast enough to get banned too quickly! Anyway about the rideout, i only have road tyres at the moment and no crash bars so i wont come along for the ride but if i may come to the meet to see everyone and look at what i need to get to make the next one that would be great?
Off touring in Sweden on it this summer so should have it all by then.
Thanks.
It would be great to see you Pete.
I'm mulling over organising a rideout over the Mendips around Charterhouse and Priddy. I found an easy Byeway the other day that would suitable for road tyres. I just need to get out there and sort out a route. In fact if I do it in the Summer I'll sort out a BBQ as well for after.

Hi Dave, The rideout sounds good but I like the sound of the BBQ at the end of the route/meet. Great chance for people to meet everyone properly..
Hi Dave,
I have done a few rides myself up on the plain, the Ridgeway is good for road tyres and lots of gravel tank roads about now but have to be considerate for other users and walkers on suchaccessible routes. A fun few hours though and very difficult to get lost !

Between you and Maverick, is there a competition to be more British than the British? All you ever talk about is the weather.
lootch67
15-03-06, 02:09 PM
It's because I'm NOT a Brit that I need to check the weather before I venture outside. Don't fancy riding in the rain for 120 miles, then play in the mud (which I could do much closer to home) and then ride the 120 miles home again, this time even wetter and colder. Really hoping the weather holds though as I'm gagging for some decent off-road riding.

Sorry this competition is only open to non British inhabitants and closing date for bitching and moaning about the weather will be around when the weather improves and we expierence these so called "heat waves" the british refer to in the again so called summer

As i said, should get over for the meet but wont make the ride, it will be muddy and thats no place for road tyres ! i need all the help i can get falling off is funny to start with then its just a pain in the arse .
should be a sight though 13 or 14 bikes. what are you southeast boys going to do Monday with a hosepipe ban ! You cant use our water to clean it .
I might have to dig my video camera out for the departure from Countess services
If anyone's coming across the Mendips give me a shout and we can meet up for the thrash, I mean ride down to the plain.
Right then a few obvious things.......
Mainly for the newbies.
Make sure you are warm and dry throughout the day, although the ability to remove clothing as well will be useful as you might get quite hot.
Spare pairs of gloves and socks may well be welcome.
You will probably get covered in mud, its part of the fun, so wear old kit if you're concerned.
Make sure you are fuelled up ready for the trip, there aren't any petrol stations on the plain! There is petrol available at the services where we start.
Bring food and drink with you, we tend to stop every so often for a break.
Please respect other users of the plains, horse riders, walkers, cyclists and 4x4's will probably all be out there.
Respect the plains and stay on the tracks. We do push the official boundaries a little  but hopefully we're sensible, and charging off tearing up the surrounding grass is not a good idea.
There are Rangers on the plain, please be courteous towards them, and listen to what they say.
Overall take your time and enjoy yourself, its no race.
Anything else that anyone needs to add?

OK, looks like I might've convinced another TA rider to join us, so we're at least 15½.
It would also be nice if we have decent photographers around whether we could get some good action shots.
We always seem to charge around without stopping and it would be nice to find a few spots and then set-up some shots.

I distinctly remember you saying something like these KTM's are for big girls and they don't go through mud very well.
It sounds like you had a great day! good to come along to see everyone and i shall be ready for the next one. I rode home across the plain sticking to tank tracks then spent most of the day on the bike, was that a perfect day for a bike or what . I may have seen a couple of lads on their way home coming through Atworth looking suitably muddy, i shall have a look at your pics but it is one of my favourite places wherever i have travelled, the plain is a lovely place on a nice day (Provided you get off safely and dont trash your bike !)
