View Full Version : Which models are there.
I'm not familiar with the Dom.
So what models are there, is there only the 650?
I saw reference to a 250.
Interested what Honda started making it, and presumably they've stopped so when did that happen?

The NX650 was launched for the 1988 model year (Honda code RD02), with a kick-start as well as electric and a 13.5 litre tank. The kick starter stayed for 2 years, but was gone for the 1990 MY.
The RD02, in theory, was replaced in 1995 by the RD08 (I say in theory, because there appear to have been some changes in 1992 to the RD02 - various accessory bits like tanks and side carriers are different for 92-94), and the RD08 continued until 2003, I think. For the RD08, production moved to Italy.
The RD08 gained a 15 litre tank and revisions to the plastics.
Offshoots were the SLR650 in 1997 (19" front wheel) and the FX650 Vigor in 2000 (production in Spain).
What about the XR650L then?
As far as I know, it's basically a Dommie engine in an XR600R chassis. But never having seen any of these bikes side by side, I'm not really sure how different the 650L and Dommie are...

Pretty much completely different, apart from the engine.
But it's family allright. :-)

Aha - was going to ask what the difference was - but see someone else has done so already here (http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3344)
Cheers, :)

i own a 1999 model NX650X Dominator, you cannot compare a 1988 NX650 to a XR650L

Agreed, only the engine is similar.

Play fair - I wasn't asking for a comparison between a bottle of wine and a spaceship - they can't be that different, can they?
So from what I can gather, the NX's got road biased suspension, a metal fuel tank, small fairing and a big luggage rack.
The XRL's got off-road biased suspension, a plastic fuel tank (or does it?), no fairing and minimal plastics, and only a rear fender bag as standard. Oh, no pillion pegs either.
Fair enough, few parts other than the engine may be interchangable, but as "dual sport" bikes, they don't seem to be that different -just approaching the same problem from different angles..... no?

Different frame, too.

More or less...
The domi is more of a do-it-all bike, on road off road hills mud whatever, not really good at any of them but it'll cope.
The XR is a lot more offroad oriented, and it's (literally) a pain in the ass as a road bike because the seat is even worse than the one on the NX. :-)
