I wonder how much work the FMX650 would need to be more trail-worthy?

It comes with:
45mm inverted forks with 218mm (8.6") of travel (Dommie 41mm RWU forks with 220mm - 8.7" travel)
Delta-Link Pro-Link rear suspension, 186mm (7.3") travel (Dommie 195mm - 7.7" travel)
Ground clearance 216mm (8.5") - (Dommie 245mm - 10")
Seat height 875mm (34.5") - (Dommie 865mm - 34.25")
Dry weight 165kg (363lb) - (Dommie 152kg - 334lb)

As the FMX currently has more fork travel, higher ground clearance, lighter weight and a similar seat height to the BMW F650GS Dakar (all it needs is more rear suspension travel), I think it could work - all it would need is a bigger tank, I suppose. :?:

Mine does about 17 km/l, though I can get up to 20 or so if I ride it like a car.

Tank range with the standard 13 liter tank on a '89 was about 110 miles until reserve. Now with the acerbis I get 200 miles...

(Yes I'm mixing units here, my brain thinks in km and my bike thinks in miles.)

When I was doing a few laps of the course, I got up to nearly 130 miles before hitting reserve - averaging about 55mpg, I think, all told here on the island.

Oh, right.

I normally do a lot of city riding and commuting, that usually gets me 17 km/l (47 mpg). When on a trip I get more as well, up to 60 mpg even, because of the long stretches.

Should be OK with just some knobbly tyres on there, I'd have thought?

And some spoked, larger wheels - especially the front one :D

It comes with spoked wheels as standard, doesn't it?

I know what you mean about larger wheels - but it's amazing what you can get away with on 17" wheels if you've got decent tyres on.

I've got an avon pro-xtreme rain front and an avon distanzia rear on my XR650R supermoto, and that's plenty good enough for all the green lanes I can find round here, as long as it's not too wet and boggy.

Most of the stuff I bottle out on due to the tyres is stuff I'd MUCH rather be on a lighter bike anyway!

Definitely a 21" front - I doubt the older fronts would fit the reverse forks and caliper though. Isn't the FMX down on power compared with even the last NX's? Those seem to have lost a few BHP copared with the first Dominators too. With work an FMX might be a viable option, at least in the absence of a proper NX replacement.

It's a miracle they managed to get that old aircooled lump through the emission tests anyway...

NXes are listed for about 40-44 hp, the FMX has 37...

Nothing that a bit of post-purchase work couldn't deal with

That'd be the way to go! It'd be nice to have the original for normal use and a 21" for off road (complete with proper nobbly), but I would settle for the 21". Actually, with engine mods and a different wheel, maybe this would be pretty good. I always figured Honda got it right first time with the NX, and then progressively made it too road-i-fied. With the better suspension and brakes of the FMX it could be better still...

A test I've seen a dyno test online at Motorcycle USA giving the XR650L 31hp (23KW) at 6000rpm and 29.7lb-ft (40.3Nm) torque at 3,800rpm

The FMX is listed as 37bhp (27.6KW) @ 5,750rpm and 38.6 lb-ft (52.3Nm) @ 4,500.

Would be interesting to see what the actual figure is at the rear wheel on a dyno.

[Whats the mpg and tank range on the Dom?]

My '95 used for the 17mile commute to and from work at legal speeds in a fair mix of traffic gives me around 60mpg and a range of about 175 miles. However, on long haul trips fully loaded, the range falls to about 160 miles. Just about the same time as my bum starts to ache.[/quote]
