Formula 1s are very cheap but usually have 6 european truckers per room so lock the bikes (not that there's anything wrong with truckers - my Dad was one).

South of Paris is Chartres. I stayed there on a Sunday and was treated to this fab lightshow projected onto the cathedral. I don't know it's frequency but there are few tourists and a couple of very nice small restaurants in the square.
