Honda Norway recommend Motul 5100 Technosynthetic SAE 10W40 motor oil. Do we have other alternatives ? I have to add that since changing the filter and oil during the winter, the oil level doesn't seem to diminish :D Strange....but true. Anyone follow X-files - what is the black-oil ?...must be from a DR600

I've used Belray semisynth 10W40 for a while now, no complaints...
(And I'm not always as punctual with my oil changes as the manual would like me to be ;-))

Not really, winter is usually a pretty cold time :-), and since we're talking about an air cooled engine with no temperature controls whatsoever it stands to reason that during the winter your oil won't heat up as much as it does in the summer.

I know my bike starts burning oil when the oil temp gets near 120 degrees C, and that doesn't happen nearly as often during winter as it does during summer.

I have used 15W-40 multigrade dieseloil meant for heavy mining or constuction vehicles. Mobil Delvac MX and Neste Turbo-LXE (finn. oil refinery product) are both good selections for Dommie, clutch and engine works ok, cheap and reliable stuff + easy to get from many Agri-shops.

That Mobil stuff is easy to find in most of the countries... I guess?

Castrol GPS 10W40 semisynthetic for me please :D Change it every 2K but to be honest It could stay in there longer. Never looks badly burnt and infact still looks original red on the dipstick after 2K, but I'm paraniod, so out it goes along with the filter :D

I have a chance to buy semisynthetic 10W-40 (4 stroke) at a reasonable "Norwegian" price of £25 for 10 litres or mineral oil @ £37 for 20 litres (£1.85/L). Does a Dommie NEED semi or fullysynthetic oil ? After recent discussions I feel a bit hard done by having to fork out £8/litre.

Personally I'd stick to semi synthetic. You have to bear in mind that the engine is partially cooled by it's oil and if revved hard they can burn up a bit too. If you do choose the mineral oil option, you would do well to change it every 1000 miles or it's going to burn and not protect things very well.
Only my opinion mind, and all advise must be tempered with the certain knowledge that I'm a worry wart

Indeed. Semi synth 10W40 is the safe option, full synth is overkill given the change intervals in an engine like this. Dunno much about mineral, no experience with that myself but a guy I know swore by the stuff for his old XT500.

Basically you just have to play with the change intervals a bit, if the oil comes out black and smelly then you've left it in too long...

Greetings form Estonia! I am new to this forum and need a bit of help. Somehow I managed to lose my original oil dipstick during last oil change (I use RR stick with thermometer daily and it doesn't have level marks). If anyone could measure both the higher and lower level distance from the end of the stick, I'd be grateful! Didn't find this information anywhere, so thanks in advance!

Which reminds me, I need to top up the oil!

Be right back.

Gotcha

The high mark is at 8 cm. (I've put a little edge in it with a metal saw. It's more visible in daylight, though.) I haven't made a mark for the low, but it's 2 or 3 mm off the end of the stick if I recall correctly.
