After the recent maintenance and repairs I carried out, the only thing that's not working is the rev counter. It's temperamental and displays different values every time I'm out on the bike. Apart from the instrument itself - any other idea's so that I can put this one to bed :?:

I've heard of this problem before, and I'm pretty sure its an earthing problem. You'll need a multimeter and check all earth points but thats where my money on.

Could people check their headlights to see whether they match the lens on mine?
http://samwise.smugmug.com/photos/65657214-M.jpg
Reason I'm asking is that my Dommie was originally a French-market model, so not sure which headlight is on it (no MOTs over here, so it might be wrong :dontknow:)

mine's like yours, but it came from a breakers in kent (don't ask why  )
funily enough just got her MOT'd and the guy remarked about the beam being higher on the right than on the left. Couldn't figure out why and passed the old girl anyway :D

That's what I semi figured
Hey all.
Can anyone assist in how to fault troubleshoot the speedo ?
Mine stopped registering any speed on the way home tonight...i.e. I was travelling at 0mph @ 5Krpm
As an aside, is this a valid excuse for speeding...
"Of course I know how fast I was travelling officer....exactly 0mph!!"
Anyway, I've removed the cable from both ends...nothing seems 'amiss'...what next :?:
any ideas gratefully accepted :D
Thanks in advance.

Check the gear which is driven off the front wheel.
But first -
Did you take the inner cable out of the outer cable to check it? as these can snap - Chads did on his @ and i'm sure its a similar cable. I think its more likely to be this - if not then i'm stumped :? - youd need to dig into the speedo housing more - or go to halfords and buy a cheap cycle speedo.

Not yet...but I've got Friday off so I'll just "potter" to work tomorrow and then remove the cable, lock stock and barrel on Friday to check it over.
Cheers.
Check out the big brain on brad !!

Anton88 you are THE man.
My bloomin' speedo cable has snapped...I undid the Instrument connector and gave a little tug on the cable with pliers..it just kept coming and coming lol.
So any way thanks for the tip..now tell me where I can get one from
Just off to check Dave Silver......

Mine has snapped two cables in 24k miles. Before you strip the inner out, attach the clock end to a drill and ream out the liner to make sure you get any rust deposits off the side walls. Next is flood the liner with oil when you reattach it. I didn't do this the first time and ended up getting another cable as the first one failed in the exact same spot as the original :( (hate spending money and these things aren't that cheep)

Scott,
B4 u get carried away, make sure you disconnect the whole speedo to check its snapped - the inner cable that you pulled out will come out anyway - you need to check the other end at the wheel to see if there is still a bit in there. (unless i've misunderstood what youve written and youve done this?).
The inner cable should be one piece - if you find 2 pieces then yes its snapped.
Sorry - just trying to save you any un nessecary expense.

Lol  ...that's OK.
Actaully I never checked at the wheel hub end for the remaining piece..
However, the piece that came out was only about 18 inches long and as Sqirrel wrote there was a 'snapped' and rusty end on it, so I am pretty much sure it is broken.
Thanks guys

Anton88, the cable can't all come out the top as there is a lip on the bottom bit. It must be fed in from the bottom, up

Well then that's proof positive that my cable has snapped.
Anyway I've ordered one from WEMOTO - £10.75 inc. £1 p&p. :P
David Silver wanted £13.95 + VAT + p&p AND they didnt even have one in stock  ...twats.
WEMOTO had one in stock and the luvverlee American (I think  ) lady assured me that it would be posted this morning, so I might get it tomorrow.

Sorry - i didnt realize that the cable could only come out one way - thanks for that Squirell - now i know :D
Wemoto have been really good when i've used them - theyve also got lots of other dominator spares if you should need them and their pricing seems pretty good. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hi fellow petrol heads! My Dommie's headlight's internals have now got a mind of their own and rattle about something terrible....of course the glass is supersupersuperglued to the housing, so I need a whole unit. I've noticed that some ebay items market these as NX650/Transalp scheinwerfer (oh yeah ! I need a continental one...). Are they really one of Honda's standard parts that fit both models and all years ? Can anyone shed some LIGHT on this :-D .....ahem I must subscribe soon...ahem...

Funny you should mention that, mine has a buzz at a certain rev. When I first heard it I thought it was the cam chain. Couldn't be that coz I'd only just put it together with a new one.
If it's a common fault it'll make it harder finding a good one.:(

I don't know how you hear buzzing ? You have to wear earplugs Cat ! The reason I noticed is that during night riding the only thing I could see now and again was the top of trees ....I wonder if the oncoming traffic thought it was a UFO approaching ?:mrgreen:

BTDT, and no way can you get that unit open...
The domi and transalp headlights are slightly different, though I'm not sure if they're similar enough that a TA light can be bodged into a dommie nose. Thought about giving it a go, but found a dommie light on german ebay instead.
What happened on mine was that the right hand bottom wotsit came off, rattling about like nothing else and causing the reflector to tip upwards and to the left straight into oncoming traffic. They didn't like that. ;-)

Hi people!
First of all, please excuse any mistakes about names of parts of the bike, I'm spanish and I'm not very sure about the designation of pieces! About the speedo breakdown, I've got something to add: it happened to me in a long trip I did to the south. While still in town, before departing I realized that the speedo didn't work, and since I didn't want to travel with no hints of what amount of fuel I still had, I decided to go to a Honda store and buy one cable. But when I took the old cable out I noticed that it was not broken, so it could only be the white nylon sprocket that transforms circular movement to linear (cable) and is encased in an alluminim case. So I bought one and replaced it. The old one had 95.000 kms and was completely worn out, with no "teeth", just round shaped. Changed it and off I went. But 600 kms after that, the speedo broke down again. It was pretty strange to break 2 in the same day. I had to leave it because there were no Honda stores around, so I travelled the rest of the trip paying special attention to fuel and distance.
I returned to Barcelona and went to the Honda store where I bought the sprocket, to see if warranty covered the issue. But they started to ask me the mileage of the bike, whether if I had changed the sprocket once, etc. And they said to me that maybe after thousands and thousands of kms the white nylon that forms the "teeth" of that sprocket had turned into a microscopic dust, which combined with the dense grease that lubricates the whole thing had made it completely hard to spin. That turned out to be true as I saw later. They mechanic was friendly enough to explain me how to fix it without buying the entire piece set, which is aluminium drilled and quite expensive! And what I did is: first take apart the front wheel and take the whole piece to the desk. Then you take apart the broken white sprocket and with a brush clean as much grease as you can. And then, with a vertical drill or any drill that you can adjust speed, make a 2-3 mm hole just in the bottom of the aluminium case. Then put it in a recipient with gasoline and make that steel screw inside spin for a while, until any trace of grease is cleansed and the thing is clean (I did it attaching the speedo-cable to the drill and just spinning, as in real life would work). You'll see the liquid very dirty and FULL of microscopic dust that shines under light. Now it's clean and ready to run another 100.000 kms. I used Nural to refill the drilled hole, let it dry properly (some hours), put the right amount of dense grease again, put the new white sprocket, and, by the way, grease the cable so you have it everything lubricated!

I hope my explanation was useful (It would have been shorter if I explained it in my language :thumb:)
Cheers
