The reason there's very few viruses writted for linux is mainly just cos there's still only about 12 people prepared to put up with using it on a regular basis.
Only time I've had a virus was when me and a colleague decided to try and alleviate the boredom of working in tech support by sabotaging each others PCs on a fairly regular basis.
I did cause company wide panic however, when one day I attempted to use active directory group policy to change his desktop background. Wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing, and gradually over the course of the day we recieved a stream of calls from irate people who's desktop background had been replaced with a picture of peter andre
Luckily the MD wasn't in the office that day.

What I'd give for a fun tech job like that

Sorry to hear that mate....have you tried Avast Antivirus (It's excellent and it's FREE  just Google for it) I used to to use Norton AV, but when the licence came up for renewel I tried Avast. It found 3 nasties that Norton hadn't seen, and it updates daily. But I'm sure the PC experts round here can tell you what's best
Best of luck, and watch where you're splashing that paint !!! :director:

Have you tried re-booting in safe mode and restoring to an earlier date, that gets rid of a lot of the registry corruptions.
No doubt DaveS and co will be on soon, with better advice.
thats bad news dude . frustrating cos you cant grab it and give it a slap
have you tried Avast Antivirus Been using Avast for a while , before that AVG (also free...) In my experience Norton seems to create more problems than it solves - wouldn't have it on my PC...

+1 on the thumbs down for norton.
I use McAfee Virusscan, but only cos it was a free leftover from my old job.
Between that, and Spybot Search and Destroy, and regular Windows Updates, I've never had any virus probs on any of my PCs (touch wood  )

Avast! is very good. It's detection rate is better than AVG, and it's cleaning sucess rate is considerably better.
Whack that on, and get it to do a scan on reboot. It can clean files before windows starts, which means they are not in-use.
Make sure however, you don't have more than 1 anti-virus installed at any one time, as that's a sure-fire recipe for disaster.
May take a while to do a full scan and clean, set it going, and then get the paint brushes out... :-)
PS. Shaun, did you get the MCN article back?

My computer at work was really playing up 2 weeks ago. After it's 10th restart (it takes 10 minutes each time to log on to our server) I lost it and gave it a giant kick (it sits on top of my desk).
The kick made it wobble and knock over the full to the brim cup of tea which covered my entire desk (it's a huge desk). I picked up my mug and slung it on the floor where it shattered into about 40 pieces. My phone then started ringing as I went to get as much kitchen roll as I could carry. When I returned, my mate had picked up the phone and asked me if I could have a quick word with I.T. as they couldn't get one of our plotters to work with someone elses autoCAD. he took one look at my face and asked them to ring back in 15 minutes.
The next go at logging on my PC sorted itself out and I haven't switched it off since, I just lock it and turn the screen off. I'm down to my last 6 mugs now.

According to a recent review, all anti-virus software is much of a muchness at detecting and deleting known viruses, ie ones the regular updates tell them to look for.
Where they differ in quality, is there use of heuristics to identify suspect files and viruses which are as yet unkown to the AV programmers.
They are all pretty crap at that!
So grab some free AV software, update it daily.
Above all, if a pop-up or active X request looks dodgy, it probably is!

Same here. ITs prooven there are no Viri out there for Windows 95,or 98. people stopped writing them ages ago. So now people that run them are safe !

Wow that's pretty scary, Win98 has more security holes, than swiss cheese, MS gave up supporting it with security updates quite a few years ago now, and even when it was supported, it's legacy windows 3.1 internals was a security nightmare for Microsoft, hence the push to everyone to use the more secure NT heritage used in Windows 2000 / XP.
How do you KNOW you don't have viruses and spyware, and are being used as a host to infect other people's PC and send spam, if you don't run any AV or Spyware?
For your sake, I really hope you never do online banking, or shop online....
Even if you disable realtime scanning, and set a manual scan once a month, it's better than nothing. There is no excuse for anyone not to run AV or Spyware software.
There are estimated over a million zombie PC's spewing out spam, and virues every day, yours could be one of them..
At minimum, I would recommend these FREE tools:
For Virus Scanning on all Windows versions: Avast.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
For Spyware/Malware Scanning on Windows 2000 / XP: Windows Defender.
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware
For Spyware/Malware Scanning on Win95/98/Me: Spybot Search And Destroy.

Yes always remove any existing antivirus and reboot before installing anything else. Having two installed at the same time may cause chaos, or worse still then end of the world.

ahhh I used to put all desktop icons in a folder called desktop, then put that in a folder called desktop, then copy the folder about 50 times and leave 50 off copies of it on someones desktop.
Or.... log into a remote PC as an admin $C is good here, then just copy icons and keep pasting them into the desktop folder.
the more people delete, the more appear !!!

I use both, I have a Linux server at home, running Gentoo Linux, doing file serving, web server, email spam filering and other tasks. It's very reliable, the only time I reboot it, is when I update the kernel.
I use XP Pro on my laptop, and XP x64 edition on my desktop, also both very reliable, never had a virus, never had spyware. It's all down to being vigilant about what you open, what sites you visit, and what software you install.
The best defense of all, is common sense...

i got the "about blank" virus .
tried dozens of solutions. none worked-i re-installed windows-sorted.
if you have only a small number of additional progs that you would need installed, i would suggest a re install (1 hour) vs 2 weeks of messing about (15 hours)

That is the worst one I've come across, like you say after the fourth evening of feckin around a re-install was the easiest fix.
I now partition my drive in two, with just Windows & programs on one bit and all my stuff on the other.Makes re-installs v.quick

Reading through the above, somebody suggests using 'Ad-aware'. I use this at present, and I've had no recent problems (famous last words).

I know how most of them work, and know how to sort the problem out without full system rebuilds ;) 8)
