I just told the wife that my new exhaust had arrived, and it only cost £200ish pounds. But it will make me a safer rider because people will hear me on it.
There, justification.

I offered her anythign she wanted up to the Value of £500 ... she declined.

New kitchen planned for September

Met my wife for walk along the Thames at lunchtime (bloody hot in bike gear). She mentioned in passing that she was really pleased I liked the bike so much and, without a drop of bitterness, noted the fact that it had costs a lot more than the initial budget.
So
1. She's spotted the fact that I have bust the budget and am still spending.
2. She doesn't mind.
How's that for a result?
I once failed a driving test for "failing to anticipate the actions of other drivers". I just failed to anticipate the action of my wife too.

Ermmm not wanting to sound pesimistic or anything but the mere fact that it was brought up already indicates into some sort of negotiation process being started

What it is you will probably find out in due time  Best is to buy flowers/chocies/gifts now and say thanks for being able to bend the budget rules a bit 8)

No, no, no mate. You can buy all the gifts in the world and it won't help a bit. Best to get on your bike and ride! [Freddie Mercury voice off]

I have to agree with the rest of the possy, for your wife to mention the bike and budget means she regards it as bargaining position, one which a positive to you and a negative to her. As mentioned this is a starting point for something she wants. My advise... pre empt it by asking her if she feels she is not part of the biking or is there something she would like to do instead. She already knows what it is....but by you asking shows consideration and appreciation for her needs. major brownie points. :D

Living with 4 females - wife, daughter, dog and cat- don't know what the bloody fish is. I reckon there is some serious psychological trauma heading your way.
