Being new to bikes, and reluctant in this case to learn by trial and error (too painful!) I decided to invest in some "advanced" training.
After looking at what was available I settled on Survival Skills who are based in Maidstone, Kent. It's a one-man-band, run by a guy called Kevin Williams. He's not an ex-copper and doesn't use a ROSPA or IAM syllabus; the training programme has been put together by Kevin over the years and uses elements from various systems, plus experience of surviving 15 years as a courier!
I did a two day course, which cost £240 and included one-to-one training with bike-to-bike video and a full written debrief. I was really pleased with the results and reckon it was money well spent. As well as an immediate improvement in my riding, I've also got a good idea of what I need to work on.
More details on the web site at www.survivalskills.co.uk and Kevin also runs the Survival Skills forum at Visordown http://www.visordown.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11
I have no connection with Survival Skills or Kevin Williams other than as a happy punter. If anyone wants more information about what I did and how it went, then feel free to contact me. If you're interested in a course, then I suggest you email Kevin rather than phone him as he's out and about a lot.
