View Full Version : Arai Tour-X vs BMW Enduro (or even Shoei Hornet)

Think I need to replace my old Arai (Quantum F). I've been using it 4-5 years, but I found the date of manufacture stamped inside and it's over 7 years old now. Which means the dealer sold me a 2-3 year old lid

Anyway, Tour-X has to be a contender. But the BMW Enduro helmet looks very similar - also lighter (1400g) and cheaper (235 pounds) and claims you can get the peak on and off very quickly. Anyone actually seen these two?

Also, any pictures of any of these without the peaks on? All the press photos and web sites show them with the peak on. Which is suspicious to those of use with normal road bikes who would want to wear them like that...

I've not used any of the two but I still like the Tour-X more. Also found this http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122735.

Good Luck. Please let us know how you get on

Infinity are selling the HJC version now, for a ton. I've yet to read a bad review of their helmets but YMMV!!

Try both - you need the best fit for your head (sorry not being funny).

I haver the tour x and am very very happy with it. Light, comfortable and looks the dogs 8) Negotiated with Cisbury Leathers and got it for £240 from the BMF.

Also the backup you get from Arai is second to none. :D

After a 'phone call or two, looks like the BMW one is near impossible to get hold of. That's what the local dealer says anyway - which means I'm not going to get to try one on.

So far I'm not seen a Tour-X nor the BMW nor the Hornet nor the HJC. The Arai one I might consider getting without seeing it (good past experience with Arai), but it's a tad risky as Arai have different shapes for different models (G and L types, I think???) so it might not work. Will try and find out from Phoenix, if I can think of a way to phrase it that doesn't sound like "please help me to buy from a grey importer rather than you" :?

Maybe I should get a normal road helmet! Chances of me needing anything off-road style in the next 5 years is really slim

Hein Gericke have the HJC ones - look quite good

my other half has a HJC not the enduro style one and she loves it - quiet comfy and fits well!
i find that the HJC fit is better than my Caberg and the helmet feels pretty well made!

go and try loads on - toy shopping cooooooool!!! 8)

Hmmm, there's also the Airoh S4. Though it takes "about 5 minutes" to convert to/from "road helmet" which seems excessive... good review at http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/airoh-helmets/ (those guys seem to do decent reviews of things, though providing MP3s of the noise inside a helmet seems beyond the call of duty!)

z-weiser, thanks for mentioning Hein Gericke, I had totally forgotten about them! Ruling out the dire Carrick Yamaha (a W*nk Thomas emporium) and Harley Davidson, there's now one biker dealer in Edinburgh worth visiting. In the last couple of years or so five shops have gone: MotoCal (independent), Alvins (Docati, Suzuki, KTM), Duffus (Aprilia), Edinburgh Kawasaki and Infinity.

I have the go-ahead to purchase a new helmet and the tour-x is on the list. Have however found this on the web and really like the styling and price of these helmets. Don't know the brand or how good they are but sure looks the biz

It is the x-moto style

Marushin (http://marushin.de/) is the manucaturer and you can get them from mainland europe for 149 euro.

Hey, these things are really catching on! You can get then for 90 pounds from here: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Riderz-co-uk-Shop Interestingly, it says it's not road-legal if the visor is fitted...

I see they offer to exchange it if it's the wrong size - though that's still a bugger if it's the wrong shape for your head...

Tour-X is probably a great lid for a trailie, but it's never going to work on a bike with clip-ons. The "snout" is really long, so you can't turn your head - bashes into your shoulder. (Moral: never be embarassed to "assume the position" whilst trying bike gear in a shop, you may save a lot of money!)

So that plan bits the dust :(

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion of going to hein gericke, where I finally saw one. Be warned though - HG say they are going to stop stocking it! (Will still do special orders). Also they didn't have the "dual purpose" style HJC. Maybe the Edinburgh branch doesn't sell much of this sort of stuff?

I have ordered one of these jobbie with an extra clear visor and total of £112.00 Will give feedback in due course whether it is money down the drain or well spend. My GUT feeling tell me it's gonna be better than hoped for at 1550g weight and looks. Hopefully it performs as well as it looks.

Taking one for the team......you guys owe me

Received the Marushin today and will give some feedback after my testride home tonight. Initial thought - it's lovely, light, good quality and looks well 'ard. I don't know if you will find a better helmet for the price. Not sure how it's gonna be on me noggin and windnoise etc but will give feedback......stand by houston......over :salute:

Right quickly fitted the darker visor before leaving for home and initial thoughts.

It sits quite snug and feel solid on your head. It did hurt the top of my head for the first ten miles and then it sort of settled in.

Windnoise much less than my System V
Much bigger peripheral vision and the only thing you do need to keep in mind is when you do a life saver check that the wind force is certainly much more than with a normal helmet. Can't think that the Arai or BMW would be any better with a peak though.
It weighs under 1600 grams so very light.
Got the gold stamp at the back approved and all the safey malarky.
Nice cool ventilation and the visor works on a click system so no probs if you need to ride with the visor in a open position either.
The finishing is very good and the matt black certainly looks cool for me.

Will comment on any negative things as they come up and other qualities as time goes on. At the moment I am sold and think for £112 delivered with a clear and dark visor it certainly is not a bad deal even if you only have it as a 2nd lid.

So there you have it.. It's an HJC CL-XS Hybrid sports cross helmet. I was on the verge of buying a Tour X but am delighted with my purchase. The lining is slightly harder than the Tour X but other than that it feels the same. Now that I have some spare cash I can get an extra present from myself this month.
Total cost £99.99.....Hey, Hey, Hey, Bargain or what!!!! It has A.C.U gold sticker on and is quite well used on the racing circuit both on and off road.

If any gremlins come out the closet I will post them before I get used to them.

Nice. I have a full-face HJC and really like it - excellent value for money. I had a minor tumble a while back and have been meaning to get it replaced. I might just pop down to Infinity in High Holborn today and have a look at the CL-XS.

According to the Infinity website the lining is removable and washable but there's no mention of that on the HJC site. Can you confirm if the lining is removable or not?

Thanks,

Tony

Hi Tony

Yes the lining is removable. It is held in place with small clips. :)

In the end I got a normal road helmet - on account of having to work with a (sort of) sports bike as well as the AT, it needs to have a normal-shaped chin bar that lets me turn my head.

This was a bargain (see http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3287)
